MSN uses the same settings that are found in the network settings of IE. check in there to see whats up. if you get IE connecting the MSN will too.

I once had a toolbar installed in IE that tried to connect to the internet every time you used it. Not a major problem in a browser but it also installed itself in Windows Explorer and tried to connect every time I opened, for example, My Computer.

I was on dialup at the time, so when I was offline it was usually because I needed the phone line, or just wasn't using the internet so wanted to be able to receive calls. The only way to stop the connection window coming up every time I opened a folder was to tell Explorer to work offline. All well and good, and since I used firefox at the time it didn't affect anything. Until I wanted to use messenger. If I wanted to sign in I needed to open IE, turn off the "Work offline" option and close it again, which let me use Messenger. Then when I was offline again and opened a folder I had to go through the rigmarole of changing the settings again.

Anyway, sorry to derail, the short form of this post would be "IE sucks. Windows Live Messenger sucks"
