I'm after a few stereotypes used by christians and the like to describe atheists, other than the obvious they must believe/worship/follow the devil, I only need 3 or 4 and not too legnthy, just bullet point type ones you could list. I did have a nose around google but it just kept giving me huge articles about how christians hate them.

Ignorant In short they think that if I knew more about Christianity, I'd surely convert. This is why they keep trying to tell me about it even though I often know more than them about the subject than they do.

Indecisive They seem to be under the mistaken impression that I state I am an atheist because I can't decide what I believe in. And for some reason that I need convincing.

Lazy I am obviously an atheist because I don't have the get up and go to find out about the lords great works. It's ok, they'll take them to me.

Immoral Without the church and scriptures to tell me how to live my life, I am obviously incapable of knowing right from wrong or deciding on my own moral code.

Another one is that they cannot understand anyone who does not have this 'faith' in their lives. They think that without it you would feel exceedingly empty.

The reason they think this is because if they didn't have 'faith' *they* would feel empty. This is because they haven't really reconciled their own existence properly and need /something/ to do that for them. Its actually bloody lazy IMO, instead of searching for real personal answers to questions of life the universe and everything, they take someone elses and call it their own.

Pretty rubbish really. I think if you like yourself and you are truly objective about what you sense in your life around you, then you /must/ be an atheist.

Religious people usually latch on to religion either because they don't like themselves, and need something to make them feel better, or they cannot reconcile their own small place in a random universe, and so need some equally random empirical theory that has been made up by some bloke thousands of years ago to make them feel OK.

God or (any god) doesn't exist. Deal with it. I'm not a satanist, cos satan doesn't exist either! God is something akin to giants, pixies and fairies IMO.

I mock them. Ever been to a church service? It's all I can do not to laugh out loud. Especially catholic ones. I like to pretend I have a remote control with buttons marked 'kneel', 'stand', 'sit', 'talk'.

Anyone read the Viz magazine? There is a comic strip in the latest one titled 'Supergod'. Very well written.

A person with faith believes that God created the heavens and the earth earth for his benefit, while an aethiest believes that he is an insignificant spec on a planet which is in turn an insignificant spec amongst the stars.

Yet those with faith still say the athiests are arrogant.

The difference is, it requires faith to believe in God. As far as I'm concerned, god not existing is a fact.

Even some very religious people will tell you that the faith is everything. Having a belief in the supernatural being is enough. Which means, in the back of their mind they must know there isn't really anything out there, but believing there is is enough.

I also love the classic "I'm not religious, but"

and, you say people should be allowed to make their own choices. Well, I would say religion is mainly about brainwashing people into believing something. Hardly a watchword for freedom of choice is it?

There are lots of fundamentalist Atheists who get more passionate about these talks than anyone else. They cannot just sit back and be content with themselves, but feel they have to mock and try and show up people who may have differing views to themselves. Its a very patronising attitude that suggests they think they know more.

Then there are those of us who sit back and let people get on with what they want. Like on Long Way Down, that rastarferian bloke who had a strong passion to what he believed in. He didn't start laughing at people who didn't shared the same views as himself, but just accepted what he believed and told his story. I don't agree with what he thinks, but its not my place to say that he's wrong. I don't patronisingly think that I am better than him because I am Atheist.

I could understand that comparison, if the motorbike didnt exists, yes a few people claimed to have ridden one thousands of years ago and a couple of books were written about them.

Yet each sunday we all get dressed in our best leathers and polished helmet, we go meet up at the local garage and sit a listen to the man with the biggest beard who tells us tales of how magnificent motorbikes are, and that if only we believe we will get to ride them when we are dead.

Each night we kneel by our beds and pray to Mssrs Harley and Davidson that they keep us and our familys safe, and before each meal we pray to the gods of yamaha and suzuki for the bountyfull fry up presented before us.

The reason I feel justified in saying that there isn't a god in these discussions is because I believe a lot of people agree with me, but they are too afraid of the religious groups and PC stuff that they don't say anything.

Let me just go back to a word you just used. Patronising.

I'm sorry, but I've never ever seen anyone as patronising as Christian preachers. They believe they are right no matter what. Fine, if thats what they believe, but there is no need to foist the 'message' off onto anyone else.

I say what I think on this subject when it comes up on the forum. I don't go ramming it down peoples throats in Reading town centre of a saturday. Which many 'lay preachers' choose to do.

I know there isn't a god, and I would prefer it if more people acknowledged it. But the main thing that really gets my goat about it, is the power that the religious institutions have. For example, a student in the US was expelled from his college because he wore a T shirt which said "Mohammad is a false prophet, Jesus is the only true light" or something like that.

He didn't appeal on freedom of speech basis... he appealed on freedom of religion, and he got a massive compensation payout from the college! Now tell me if you think that is right?

Similarly, somewhere in the southern US there is a church which believes that a certain hallucinogenic can bring you closer to God. This is an illegal drug, and yet they are allowed to get away with it under freedom of religion!

Another story from the book "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins was of a man who protested against a preacher who claimed that doctors are unable to cure cancers, and he has the power to heal. A cancer patient later died because she did not seek treatment from medical professionals, but from this preacher.

The man who protested got arrested and thrown in jail for claiming god didn't exist! In the modern USA! Not in medieval europe!

I just think that the Religious institutions strangle hold on people must end, and they must just exist to provide the necessary means for people to worship if they want to, not to force people to believe, or have any influence over people at all, especially political.

Religious groups have too much power. Over people, and over politics. It should stop.

But how often does it happen the other way round? How many of the people sat in churches were brought up without any religious instruction then suddenly thought "My life is not complete without alternately standing, sitting, kneeling and reciting from a book once a week.". People do convert but I bet it's a very small proportion and only after considerable browbeating instruction.

I attended church every Sunday until I was 14. By the age of 8 I had decided it was all a load of bollocks. I was still forced to go by my parents (I have since expressed my displeasure on this subject to them) and say what you want, the 'teaching' at Sunday school was nothing short of indoctrination. I would deny the existance of god and whenever I did it would result in some form of punishment such as being made to go and stand in the corner.

I have been sent out of the school dinner hall with no lunch for refusing to say grace. I have been given detention for refusing to bow my head and say the lords prayer at the school assembly.

This was a state school by the way, in no way linked to any church or religious group and it wasn't all that long ago. The politely and formally composed letter I wrote when I was 16 (1995) stating that I did not wish to attend and participate in a religious service for a faith which I did not belong to or agree with. it was dealt with by means of a visit to the headmasters office and an assurance that my non-attendance to the school Christmas service (held in a local church) would result in me being suspended.

Brainwashing? Indoctrination?

Oh yes they are, tis the duty of parents to brain wash their children in the same way, in some religions apostacy is met with ostracism and being thrown out of the community.

As stink says he was forced till 14, people of weaker charactor maynot be able to resist and I'm assuming Stink means CoE or Catholic, things like Islam you are brain washed 5 times a day every day. Hell just look at new labour supporters , the lie gets repeated often enough becomes truth to them.

My daughter goes to a Catholic School (the things you do to get decent grades) and she is brainwashed, I do my best to try to keep her opinion as balanced as possible but explaining to a 9 year old that things her school is teaching her might not be true is not easy.

This all came to a head a few weeks ago when she anounced at the dinner table that the Hindu's are wrong, she was working under the assumption that if what she was taught was right, the people who did differently were wrong, seems quite logical really.

Children are without a doubt brainwashed by their parents with lots of silly ideas, as time goes by we take away santa, the tooth fairy, the easter bunny, yet we choose to leave the belief in god in place.

I have nothing against anyone who peacefully believes in whatever they want to believe in. I object to mindless preaching and I object to people killing in the name of their God.

Personally I am an atheist. Luckily none of my family be they religious or not have ever tried to force me to believe in anything other than what I want. I don't need religion because I don't need to use religion as a crutch to support myself in whatever situation I'm presented with.

What I do believe is that it's perfectly possible to be moral without adhering to a religious code stating how to be moral.
