Since dropping my bike the engine / gearbox is making a funny scraping / grinding noise.

Its a slow noise that gets louder, then quieter (till its inaudible), then louder again. As I rev up, the speed of the 'cycle' increases until you cannot hear it (or maybe its going so fast, you cannot tell the difference).

There seems to be no loss to power or anything and everything seems fine.

I will try to get a recording of it tomorrow, but I am just wondering what this may be?

How fast does the piston go through its cycle when idling? To go through the audible 'cycle' it takes about 1 second. I would have thought a piston goes through its revolutions quicker than that?

Sound's like your clutch casing has been stoved in a bit.

Which side did you drop the bike on.
Is the chain hitting anything or did you adjust it since you dropped the bike.

Paddy.

Definitely not the chain. Makes the noise even when the bike is not moving. That was my initial thought you see.

EDIT: Does that mean that it might not be the clutch casing scraping against the gear stuff? It makes the noise in neutral too.

Do you have any pic's of the casing.
It could be a few things but if it fell on the right side then the clutch is the
most likely thing to check first.
The clutch is in gear all the time. It's just the gears that change in and out.

Paddy.

Wait.. I'm getting mixed up now. I thought the clutch would be on the left... I dropped it onto the left hand side anyway.

Isn't the alternator/generator on the left?

No idea. I haven't ever opened up the engine beyond the top end, so don't really know. For some reason I associated the gear change lever with the clutch and assumed it would be left side Very Happy

I know on my ER5 the magnets are built into the cover with the windings spinning inside them.

I think you have that backward. The windings are fitted to the cover and the magnets are in the rotor fitted to the crankshaft.

Good point.. I've got a CG125.
Gear lever doesn't look bent. To be honest, I've not done a majorly thorough check, but the gear lever seemed fine. Footpeg took most of the brunt it seems which is good.
Will check tomorrow though!
