if i dont have an L plate on the back? i have fitted a bracket, so that i have a reflector at the bottom of my number plate, however there is no way of fitting the L plate on.
And... i think i need an indicator relay, however i took it apart and it looks fine, could it be something to do with the 2 wires going in to the relay, and do i have to get one specificly for my bike?
thanks
Joe

indicators are not required... take them off.
just make sure you put a bit of electrical tape over the indicator switch.

just pass the MOT then sort the indicators at a later date.

Wrong , Only if the bike was made before 1986.
Test the relay by putting a screwdriver across the terminals on it and see if they come on ( they won't flash tho , if they come on and don't flash the the relay is goosed)

no, you're wrong... SRAD is 1997? i took them off because they had problems on the day of the MOT, so i fixed them and put them on after its MOT.

I was under the impression that they cannot remove or disconnect stuff from the vehicle.

That is to say that if you make you switch inoperable through the use of sticking tape over it, they will not be able to remove the tape, thus rendering your indicators surplus to requirements. That's why jap import cars have those garish stick on rear fog lights because there is a switch for them! Take a look at any supra/skyline/FTO/GTO or anything of that sort and see something located near the zorst.

So if u lop off the indicators, use hand signals. I'm not sure if that is only applicable to a specific period of vehicles. I'm sure somebody will clarify this for me.

When's your MOT?

With regards to your L plate, take the reflector off, just mount the L plate as you would normally do and stick on the reflector onto the plate either vertically or horizontally on the lettering, it still counts. a quid from halfords (or nick it) does the trick! That's that sorted.

Hi

Indicators are compulsory on a modern road bike. You certainly should not have got an MOT without them.

There are odd exemptions for off road bikes (stupidly high seat height and ground clearance) and also if you can fiddle a daylight MOT. If you have a rear position light then the rest become compulsory including the indicators.

To the original poster, L plate is not part of the MOT, although if it covers the reflector there might be an issue, and if you remove it to ride to the MOT then you might get done for it.

All the best

Keith

have you really?

not wanting to dissagree with kickstart as he seems to know his stuff but i have taken 3 bikes (RD,NSR,NSR-RK) through MOT without indi's and they all passed. Exclamation

edit: doing a bit of research it does seem that keith was right so im not sure how my 2 nsr's passed MOT (the RD was '86') so maybe just fell within the right period

My bike failed an MOT for the back L plate covering the reflector... As has been said, the L's aren't part of the test, just whip them off for it and stick them back on afterwards.

The garage have no way of knowing what kind of license you have anyway and they won't ask to look at it.

No idea about your indicators right enough... But, there seems to be a lot of incongruities between test centres, my bike failed its most recent MOT on the rear sprocket being excessively worn (and it was really worn, 19 teeth left on it.) No way it got like that in the space of a year, it wasn't a case of being borderline; yet the garage that did the previous MOT didn't comment on it.

Nothing to do with your MOT but if caught by the Police they can give you 3 Points for each L plate missing from your Bike/Scooter/Jo-ped.

If a tester fails your bike on no rear reflector they are a cnut. Don't use them again.

Any motorcycle MOT tester worth his salt will have a sheet of sticky-backed red reflectors. It is REALLY common for the rear reflectors on motorcycles to fall off or otherwise go missing. What should happen is the following:

"You've come back to pick up your bike for its MOT? Well, it was going to fail on a missing rear reflector but it hasn't and you owe me 20p." *Points at sticky reflector on numberplate*

You might get away with it from a friendly tester, and it used to be legitimate and common. Standard MOT fix for non working indicators was to take them off.

All the best

Hi

What are the exact problems you are having?

As a first step check the bulbs are the correct wattage. Check the earths are clean.

All the best

Yes, except in very limited circumstances.

The indicators worked fine but then i replaced the battery and the relay stopped working. i can hear the relay click on but doesnt release. so the indicator comes on and stays on.

Hi

Are both bulbs on? Common sign a bulb has gone is that the other indicator bulb sticks on.

All the best

mattspratt is 100% right, stick tape over the switch and they have to ignore it, if they cant test it they cant fail you on it, the age of the bike doesnt even come into it!

its the same theory on a car mot, you can fail the MOT on a flat spare tyre but if you remove the spare wheel they cant test it so you cant fail on it. obviously indicators are slightly more important than a spare tyre but the theory is the same Thumbs Up
