I use 2000 and xp about the same but I voted for 2000 anyway because I thought that the majority of people would say that xp was the best, xp has a better driver database so is really better for a main system. Also in my opinion linux/unix should only be used on servers and not for personal computers. But if you want to make the list a little bigger you could have put Windows me and whatever the sun's operating system was os/2 (i think) and solaris (or is that just another distro of linux?) and novel netware, i'm bored and computers are the only thing i'm good at don't you know.Would I be right in assuming that your not sure what operating system to put on your bro's computer?

P.S whats happened to the spell checker?

I know what OS will be getting used on my brothers system - he run's XP as its what my sister in law is used to and also it works fine for him and the rest of the family.

I'm asking just as I wondered what people used mostly these days. I've been on Win 2000 for a while now and its format time on my PC so I'm going with XP this time around.

Not overly interested in peoples use of Linux etc just put it there as an option as you always get the die harders. Wink Laughing Though I did forget to add win ME to the list (I personally found that more stable than 98se on my old system, yet on my brothers it was useless).

XP hogs to much systems resources with its fancy graphics and what have you. The Home vesrion has very weak security and XP hides all options and settings from you as if you are a numpty. I would rather not have XP deciding on things for me.

That is all true, i can't use home because it won't allow you to join a domain and i need my domain cause i'm too lazy then to go and put proxy details in for every user on every computer (saves me time, effort and other stuff with a domain).

I just turned off all the fancy graphics and effects, went to 'classic' style rather than the annoying XP menu... it's all good.

XP Home looked pretty evil, only used it once on my mum's pc though. She gets on fine with it though, which is probably the point - an OS for people who aren't even remotely interested in how it works.

I like the new sparkly tarty menu, think the old one looks a bit chunky and blocky Confused .

Hi

Currently using 98SE at home, but just got another PC and installed XP on that. However not yet put any of the web software onto it so I am not using it really at the moment.

Keep meaning to get a decent copy of Linux and learn how to use that.

All the best

Keith

Keith,

Red hat 9! I can even show you how it works. Personally I think that X windows is better for a lot of things than Microsoft windows!

Linux Rules! Smile

Hi

It is tempting. Aren't Red Hat giving up on Linux for desk top use though?

We have a PC with Linux loaded, but have done nothing with it. We were going to try and use it as a server. Forgotten the password on it now.

Only other down side is that I still use some old Compuserve email software which would not run under Linux.

All the best

Keith

I've got Red Hat 9 at work and they have just done a LOT of updates to it. I don't think they would make all of that investment of time and just throw it away. Its the most powerful and least annoying (once you're used to it) OS that I've ever used.

Dual OS! Being that its completely free you haven't really got anything to lose to give it a try (apart from some time downloading it I suppose.)

Its a shame I can't demonstrate it to you but all of my red hat stuff is at work, and I haven't gotten round to sorting it at home. (and I can't remember where you live - I'm another Readinger.)

Only really use my home PC for games and BCF so it isn't really worth it for that (I need directX Sad )

I am impressed with Xwindows though. It comes with equivalents of word, excel and that all free!

TBH I'd rather see MS junked and everybody go to linux, but there just aren't the device drivers available at the moment.

Smile
