depends how high you go.. you can be skiing right up till may in some areas, although the roads are usually well cleared by then. Bear in mind that while they may be clear, if they are relatively recently cleared, they may still have a lot of grit on them, which is not much better than gravel for grip

I organised a VFR Club trip to Austria at the end of May/beginning of June 2004 and the really high 2500m+ passes were still closed i.e. the Timmelsjoch and Stelvio. They opened about a week after we left Confused

The Fluella and Ofen passes opened mid-May and were really nice roads, although there was 2m+ of snow at either side of the road.

The Grossglockner was open too, but was shrouded in cloud and snowing at the top. It cleared as we dropped down the south side though and the ride up to the glacier was awesome Cool

I went again in July 2005 and again this year and everything was open. I really enjoyed the French passes, but they don't tend to open until the end of June.

Cheers for the help, that pic just wets the appetite even more. The heart says i'm impatient go for it in May, and the head says wait till July.

Will have to discuss it with the others, does the price of accomadation drop during the out of season (non skiing months)?? or is it pretty similar?
