Exhaust Leak

Iv got very little experience but am keen to learn
so heres whats going on, i put a new exhaust on my bike, all seemed fine. Now a couple of weeks later i pulled up at home only to find white smoke coming out around my feet. Left the engine running and had a little look around to see what it was thinking something really bad was going on.

Then i had a look on here for things and thought mabey it was just condensation from the rain ( nonstop for about 3days ).

Went out again a few minutes ago and its definetly exhaust fumes. There coming from the seal between downpipe and can, as well as where two downpipes meet. I have a mate who could weld them up for me im pretty sure, whats to be done?

Just take the end can off and either replace the gasket or use firegum to seal the leak.

also, the exhaust came with an adaptor which fits between link pipe and can, should there have been anything put on this to make it airtight or not? there was rubber seal but is anything else needed?

Firegum? , I bought a tube today for £2.50 ,

its sort of gasket paste , though I'm going to use it to put me zorst back together on the CBR600 when I get some time.

just had a look at the firegum, for £2.50 cant go far wrong, but i dont think itll sort out the bit lower down, these are gaps that had appeared ( or just been noticed ) in a previous weld done by somone else. Is there a weld glue paste thing for this?

Firegum is utterly useless for making joints in exhausts. It sets hard and brittle, so the vibration between the parts guarantees there will be more on the floor than on the exhaust within a couple of weeks.

Every joint should have a fairly fat, malleable gasket in it. If it doesn't, use high temperature silicone to make the joint.

high temp silicone seems to be £5 a tube , might get a tube of that too.

i was looking at some hight temp. silicon here :

but it says that they are good adhesives, will this be an issue when it comes to removing the exhaust? thanks.

Yes, it will stick, that's why you are better off using proper gaskets. Use the silicone if it's fubar or you can't get gaskets for whatever reason.

You probably won't need any on a good fitting slip-on type connection, but if it's ill fitting or knackered you can use it to seal it up and it will indeed weld it together very effectively. But in that situation, you might consider that it will be the last time you will be taking that joint apart anyway...

For any kind of butted joint (i.e. where a gasket was/should be) it'll come apart no problem with a bit of judicious yanking.

I've had no problems using ordinary clear bathroom silicon sealant on all of my exhaust EXCEPT the junction between header and cylinder head.

Works out cheap from the builders merchant, or even better, 'Wilco'.

Make sure you do get silicon, and not acrylic.
