My mate's just bought herself a heap of a split window VW camper, and I've been enrolled to get the engine going again with my frankly terrible mechanicking skills.

It looks like it's not been used in about 10 years, the engine's a 2 cylinder jobby and I'm tempted to just jumpstart it and hope it goes, but is there anything I should do first? Penetrating oil down the spark plug holes? I'm imagining it'll probably end up needing a rebuild due to its age...

I'd try and find one of the forums for these things and get some specialist advice. They are pretty straightforward engines, but the splitties are pretty damn valuable now so you dont wanna screw it up!

Yup, they are flat 4's- I hadnt noticed that in the first post!

That one on eBay really isnt a shitter, not by unrestored Type 2 standards. It's actually pretty straight. Also, as a rule of thumb more windows = higher value!

Someone a friend knows scrapped a salvageable Samba shell a while back. I coulda cried!

My girlfriend would absolutely love a bay window camper, she doesn't drive yet but she's determined to get one as her first car. On account of their values it'll probably have to be a bit rough around the egdes and I'm sure I'll end up doing running repairs, but I love the things and it would be ace to restore one.

As for advice, drown the thing in WD40 to loosen everything up and go from there. Good luck with it! For more advice I really would recommend joining a camper forum!

Whats been said already, but turn it over for a bit without the HT from the coil connected. Spreads a bit of oil around and building up oil pressure.

Cleaning the carb out and blowing through the fuel line too to clear out crap and 'gell'ed petrol. A fuel filter too to pick up the crap thats in the tank.

The flat four lump lend itself to starting pretty well after sitting for a long time, as the oil spreads itself around pretty well, lots of the internals will have been sitting in oil.
