Was filtering up a single carriageway that was static due to roadworks when someone opened his door about 2 metres in front of me, if I hadn't of left a door sized gap I'd of been posting this from hospital...

Going to be much more careful when filtering those roadworks now... Think my heart rate has just about settled!

Thought you had ABS anyway and linked brakes and two huge rotors on the front ,and which side were you filtering on anyway for a door to open.

When there becomes a much higher chance of danger?

Many things you can do in cars which are dangerous to bikes are very easy to 'get away with', so people become complacent. Similar to the manner a lot of bikers crash as they become complacent with the speeds they are riding, forgetting that they do need to pay quite a lot of attention to get around that corner that may have a pot-hole in the middle Smile.

No, I don't have ABS, I was filtering on the drivers side (It was the driver getting out)

Nah, you did everything right. You thought of what may happen and left a gap, when it did your gap saved you.

The force is strong in this one. . . .

Cage drivers only look forward and at the cd player buttons. Had a dounghut open a door on me when I was doing 30 on a drop handle luckily for me reflexes were like lightning and the bike was able to flick around door. My eyes were on the pointed part at the top I had visions of it going straight into my sternum. The fella couldnt appologise enough. I just gave him a middle finger and put it down to experience.

Well at least you left a gap to give yourself some margin - its for events like this that such a margin is for.

Whenever I'm filtering, I give as much room as possible, and when I'm in the car I make sure I check properly when opening the door. Hope that guy does the same now.

3 weeks before i got my first bike i was on my pushbike, he opened the door just as i was right next to him, a very painful ride to the hospital and 4 hours later (Brilliant isnt it the NHS...) i was seen to and had anesthetic which hurts like a bitch and 8 stiches...

The wound was 2 inch's deep i think, quite painful the next morning...

when filtering long ques to traffic lights (lets say at roadworks for example) do others go into the opposite lane, if it is clear to do so?

I do, probably about 1/3 into the right hand lane.

Do other people do that? just makes more sense to me by avioding car doors and still being visible to people coming offf drives or out of sidestreets.

Yup, obviously paying attention to any oncoming traffic - and noting potential gaps in the queue when I need to get back in!

Yup namely because I've filtering with the traffic ie going out of the city or town the road into town is usually quite clear , on the Manchester route you could sit in the opposite lane for about 6 miles , be much safer too ,
