Just seen this on digg

Autoblog wrote:

South Florida has a motorcycle problem, and lawmakers are introducing legislation to show bikers that they'll go a long way to punish those who break the rules. Stunt riding (including wheelies), excessive speeding, and concealable license plates will get you a 10 year ban on your motorcycle license, mandatory jail time, and an impounded bike. If the punishment sounds like the medieval practice of cutting off the hand of a man for stealing, that's exactly how State Representative Carlos Lopez-Cantera wants it.

Lopez-Cantera witnessed firsthand a variety of incidents during which reckless behavior was on display, including bikers flying down the highway at 120 mph, high speed wheelies, and more. Police officers can't even run plates since bikers will often flip them up to avoid detection, and it's very difficult to catch a motorcycle on the open road with a squad car. We like motorcycles, even though our focus is on cars, and it's disappointing to see that things have apparently gotten so out of hand in South Florida that draconian enforcement policies are being seriously discussed.

What do you all think of that? I think it is a mad rule!

Well, that's going to make people stop for the police, isn't it?

Suspect there may now be a rife trade in fake licence plates there Smile.

Welcome to the States.

As a cop kindly told me he sees a Sports bike as an idiot tax and he loves nothing more than ticketing them.

If you can afford one you can afford the tickets and punishments.

Cops here are twats and few and far between you will find one that will give you a break.

And if you have ever been a on a group ride out in LA you can have bikes in the numbers of a couple of hundreds and you just get tailed by the cops and if you stop they ask you to move on. Hell they will even have the choppers come in low and tell you to move on.

And during bike week in most places the cops must make millions of the sh!t they ticket for.

Bastards the lot of them.

And G they wont bother chasing you if your doing over a 140 Wink seeing thats how fast their tanks go.

McGee, for living here you have a seriously bad disposition towards certain aspects of the country.

IOW, you're sounding more American by the day. ;)

Unless "Excessive Speeding", "Stunt Riding", and "concealed licence plates" are giving unarguable definition, that law should not exist. Cops write tickets and tickets pay the cops' salaries, so the more tickets they write the better they eat, so to speak. Sportbikes are easy targets because any motorcycle apart from a Harley or a Harley knockoff* is considered a plaything and not a vehicle.

* Unless it's an Indian. Cops and traffic gets out of your way when you ride an Indian Chief. Planes fly low and the rains part and any road spills clean themselve off when you ride the Indian Chief. Women swoon over you and beg to ride, other bikers envy you. It's just that awesome of a bike.

Your bitter hatred of the local law enforcement sounds pretty American to me (What, you thought you were alone?). Some places are better than others, it sounds like you got put somewhere pretty nasty. Hope you get a warm welcome or whatever when you leave and go back to the UK.

I totally agree with McGee. I spent a while living in America and most of the cops there are arseholes. They are on a massive power trip and always talk down to everyone else. I was so surprised when I came back to England and a cop walking towards me said good morning as he walked past.

After reading the same thread on stuntlife.com

It's the powerrangers that CAN'T wheelie properly, that are giving bikers in general a bad name.

You know, the kind that flip it at 100mph.

Not the real stunters that ride around in circles all afternoon at 10mph.

Circles are for posers most people rock them in a car park.

The real stunters are the ones out on the road showing the general public what we can do Wink

Also stuntlife is full of haters.

TBH if I lived there I'd be getting my plate changed to something fake already. And if I ever saw the fuzz, I'd be dead before I pulled over for them. Twisted Evil

I happen to see a group ride last summer. About 2 dozen bikers, all ages, all sizes, all different kinds of bikes. As they rounded a corner with a stop sign, some douche in the middle of the pack decided to pull a low speed wheely. Two guys on street bikes and one has to show off.

You tell me what happens when that guy falls over and a dozen bikers are packed behind him. BS like that is what put the law into place. And if that is what it boils down to, I'll support banning wheelies of any kind on any public road.

Well, if everything is as it should be, said dozen bikers come to a halt, get of their bikes and stand around taking the piss of the guy who just fell off before helping him pick his bike up.

If they are actually inattentive prats who have no idea how to ride their bike as part of a group, they become involved in a collision. Which is entirely their own fault for riding too close to the bike in front and nothing at all to do with the guy who screwed up the wheelie.

That was a truly beautiful wheelie.

And ravo, only people who cant do wheelies hate them Wink
It makes girls wet, and thats a scientific fact.

One day, im gonna stick moisture sensors up a dozen ....

Enough of that, but keep your eyes out for that paper Wink

The reason i rarely ride in groups is because for me riding is enjoyable because of the speed. I can ride fast because i know what im capable of, what the bikes capable of, and what the cagers around mes reactions will be. When you add extra bikes into the mix it all goes tits up. Only time ive EVER impacted another vehicle was at about 2 mph because my mate froze up pulling out of a junction in a landing strip sized gap. My fault legally, and technically. But had i been on my own or behind a car it would DEFINITELY not of happened. It was only because i expect people on bikes to be able to use the fuckers Rolling Eyes

Also ravo define a low speed wheely?

Yes lee stuntlife is full of haters.

But stinkwheel is right though, if the guy infront is doing a wheelie, back off, and sit over to the side, in case he does fall off.

I don't see what all the hate is really.

Yeah it's pretty fucking dumb on public roads, but until each borough gives us all a nice big airstrip to crash on, it's the only place.
