HONDA CG125

Im looking at getting one of these to chip about on as a first bike for a year, as Ive heard thier indestructable and good first bikes. Are these restricted at all? Im looking at old ones (83/84) so Im guessing their pre CDI unit versions.(honda restrict at these)

I'm thinking a CG125 from back then will be the least restricted thing ever. Its fuel to carb, to engine to exhaust put simply. No bullshit!

Cool, thanks, didn't think they would be, I know its not fast but was just wondering there may be a tiny chance of a sneaky restricting washer in the zorst! Or tiny carb jets! But like you say from back then it prob won't be!

You are thinking of the CB125 (twin), the older models put out more power than was allowed at the time for 125cc later models of it had differently shaped cams/smaller valves, i forget which..

The cg of the 70's IS more powerfull, but only a small ammount, the carb is slightly different (the pre brazilian models) but after 30years of abuse i'm not convinced even the venerable cg will be at its best.

If your worryed about power the cg is not for you, an nsr is pretty reliable and will have a fair bit of extra prod.

the cg is not restricted in anyway but if you put a jap carb (76-85) on a Brazilian bike (85- 88) it will run better according to a mate, with the CG simplicity is the best thing, they don't like being pod filtered and 'tuned' at all. however i thong a mikuni flat side will fit on if you want to make it louder and faster. It wont live as long though.

On the otherhand thay are incredibly difficult to kill.

You learn a lot about how to wring every last piece of power out of a CeeGee.

Thanks peoples, great help, like most of you say, there not a sports bike, but thats not what I want! Im getting an old one as its dirt cheap, but still pretty reliable, and good practice for a year till I do my das. Is the fuel economy really as good as 100mpg+ when riding sensibly???

To be honest you can pick up a ten year old one for around the £500 mark and pass it on when you are done for the same money.

I didn't notice a change in fuel economy between ridng sensibly and riding like a loon - it just was 100mpg+ all the time.

Mpg around town will stay pretty damn good, however a 100mile trip @50odd with the throttle open and its not so great. But chances are you'll not make a habit of it

hehe cheers, the cg is a solid bike and the only major gripes i had with it as standard was the bars and the headlight, but then again im 6 foot tall and i hate ape hanger style bars. all the other bits ive put on make it a better trail bike/commuter tool seen as thats pretty much all i do on it.

I think CG's are horrible looking things, looks like the Yugo of the bike world. I know they are rock solid, they just seem so mundane, (although not Virus' model which looks really cool.)

When you see some one bulked up in textiles bucketing along at 55mph on those skinny wee wheels, it just looks ridiculous.

Might be a contentious viewpoint but there you go. If you're an avid CG fan you can get stuck in, I can take it. I have a CLR, go on; slag it off.

The wheel and tyres look similar to my MT60's.

I just love the tyre tread knuckle guards and front mud guard. If Mad Max needed a cheap efficient commuter bike, it would be that one.

That is one seriously well looked after bike! You get away with that because its totally retro.

The 80's/90's ones look thoroughly vapid. I ocassionally (although not all the time) pass young children on my bike. When I'm not aiming for them (joking) they usually wave and do the internationally recognised 'do a wheelie big man' sign*. If some one goes past on a CG they just yawn.


*Due to a distinct lack of power on behalf of the bike and guts/skill on behalf of its rider, my bike is unable to pull a wheelie. I usually just wave back.

The current one doesn't look too bad, i reckon. (though admittedly I have one), at least now there's a scultped tank the styling's caught up with bigger naked bikes. parked next to a cbf500 it just looks like the same bike smaller, like the NSR used to next to the CBR.

and the kids downstairs seem suitably impressed by it, though admittedly I do find kids saying 'mint bike, how fast does it go?' a little awkward, as I'm left with the feeling I'm a colossal fraud, and shatterer of childhood dreams.
