I am planning to get a Tomtom V2 for christmas from my darling wife.
Can anyone offer any advice/hints to get the most out of it. I am new to satnav so don't know if I will be expecting too much of it, ie route planning and storing routes fora 10 day trip.
Any advice will be much appreciated, thanks.

You may want to check out the garmin zumo instead.

Friend had the tomtom v1 and v2, and he kept the v2 for a few weeks before he changed to the zumo. He says that the zumo is the far better gps for the bike. easier to plan trips, easier to use..etc

I would say the opposite, the Tomtom is superior to he Zumo. Cheaper, comes with the bluetooth Cardo Scala Rider & ram mount in the box.

I've just toured around europe with a mate, I had rider v1 and he had v2. They both worked brilliantly.

It can come down to personal preference. Unless your trying to get the most out of a gps ie. planning journeys, touring, the garmin I hear is far superior. This is what I hear from ppl who have tried both units, for longer periods of time..not just the one journey. The 550 has text to speech, and speaks the names of roads. Also the mount is extremely good. You don't get the headset..granted, but also for a little extra cash you can purchase the lifetime traffic warnings. You also get a car mount with the garmin, with speakers.

The TomTom Rider V2 is a good improvement over the V1. The V1 has been plagued with problems from the outset. Do a search on google, and there are common faults, which can eventually render it next to useless! Tomtom never really seemed to acknowledge the problem.

As you say, personal preferences. I've had both Garmins and Tomtoms and really I don't think one is much better than the other.

barnhatter, buy her some lingerie and keep the sat nav for yourself. You get the best of both worlds then Twisted Evil

She has already got me a tomtom v2 to give me. I was wanting to know if anyone has used one and got used to it.
I am wanting to preload routes across europe for a 2 week holiday, can it be done or do I have to load a day at a time.
Also any other operating hints and tips.
Cheers.

Yes you can plan and load ahead, it's called itinerary planning on the rider, but personally I found the best way was to log in all the places I wanted to go to in my favourites and call them up as i needed them. However my mate had everything planned under itinerary with the way points, matter of choice but both work.

I've had my rider v1 for 2 years now and I'm still finding out different things it can do, love it to bits!!

This helps alot when planning itinerary's in advance - I use it all the time and makes it much easier than doing them on the device.

that looks awsome. I have a tomtom in my car and was thinking i could use it on the bike as well...somehow. How easy are they to strap onto the tank, is this the best way...bit of gaffer tape?
