Neutral

I do try and eat healthier nowadays and as we all know by now 5 pieces a day is one way of doing this.

Here's the thing, apples, these are a great source of 'stuff' but when im eating one they make me feel a bit sick to be honest, i've gone off them and don't find them enjoyable to eat anymore.

Banana's are rank, end of.

I don't mind pears, but when you get one at the wrong time it can almost put you off ever eating one again.

Oranges, i can never get the skin off without mess goig everywhere, the white pith crap around it tastes wrong and i dont like sitting there picking it off. Quite nice to eat.

Grapes, bit like the apple thing, i find im eating them because i think i need to.

So...eeerr. fruit, don't like it much, but i know i should eat it.

Don't forget it doesn't have to be fruit, veg is equally important so maybe a carrot instead of an apple.

A tin of baked beans is one of your five a day Wink

I miss not having my mum about to cook and do stuff for me. I'm nowhere near as good a cook as my mum (although i'm getting closer!). I can't find any decent way to integrate vegetables into any of my cooking so that's out of the window.

We used to have this ridiculously expensive juice maker so each day, it was easily 10 carrots + 5 oranges + 3 apples + 3 tomatoes into the maker - clear, fresh fruit and veg juice per day - that's how I used to manage my 5 a day.

She also used to prepare and slice the mangoes so that was always nice.

Used to eat quite a lot of tropcial fuit; lychees and such like.

But seeing i don't have the patience to prepare fruit, i'm reduced to bananas, oranges and peppers. It gets boring really quick and there's a lack of variety. I'm tempremental with apples too. I only like eating pink ladies out of preference - golden delicious is simply not a good enough substitute!

I'm another big fan of that apple, give the "Fuji" variety a try as well. I find they make an adequate fill in if proper apples can't be found Wink

I can't stand most fruit but in order to get some into my diet I throw in some juice and dried. You shouldn't drink/eat oodles of it due to the high sugar content but they can make up a couple of your 5 a day Smile

Is there any proof that you need 5 a day? , or have certain companies given 'donations' to the Labour party?. Its like alcohol maximum safe limits they were made up picked out the air in 1987 by MPs.

Its like the Gillian Mckeith (Hackspit) who advises people to eat this and that , which would turn your poo into a runny paste Sick ,

Added to the fact I know plenty of people who have survived on super noodles and beer for the last 10 years and they seem ok.

Yeah I've made the same thought about the five a day, I reckon its a number picked from fresh air.

Personally I find stuff like onion, mushrooms, carrots, parsnips, spring onion, pepper and tomatoes blend well into saucy meals like stews, italian dishes etc.

Fresh rocket makes a welcome change to lettuce for salad.

Mixed beans goes lovely in pasta dishes and chilli con carne.

Strawberrys, blackcurrants, blueberries etc are all incredibly high in antioxidants and taste lush.

Cut up and apple, grapes, orange and melon for a great fruit salad.

Kiwi and pineapple are good on the odd occasion too.

And as Titz said a juicer is great. You can buy from tescos for £15. It removes all the fiber though.

Of course, after a 3 day speed bender and your body is crying for nourishment, one can always find all the vitamin C your body is craving in a bloody mary. Laughing

And if all that sounds too healthy for you, just nip north of the border where we will probably deep fry you fruit salad in batter.

Try some different varieties of apples, as they differ considerably. I cannot stand Granny Smiths, but I love Braeburns.

The problem with fruit in general compared, for example, to a chocolate bar is that fruit is inconsistent. Buy a bag of apples and a couple of them will be really nice, a few will be absolutely fine, but one may be a bit nasty. They don't necessarily look any different to their pals, but when it is time to eat them they are a bit tough, or have an invisible bruise or whatever. Confused

Buy a pack of kit-kats and they are all fine. Cool

Someone needs to sort that out.

I did a Greek style casserole the other night. Piece of piss.

Cheap bit of lamb on the bone. Bone it out and sprinkle with rosemary. Bung it in a casserole dish. Peel and quarter an onion, bung in dish. Two heads of garlic, bung in dish. One large chopped carrot, bung in dish. Two whole tomatoes, dish. Two large waxy potatoes sliced, dish.

Crack then brown the lamb bones along with the bits you chopped off the veggies (eg tops and tails of carrots, bits of onion etc.) deglaze with water and boil for five minutes. Strain and add this to the casserole dish. Add a big slug of olive oil.

Now put the lid on, throw the lot in a medium oven and forget about it for about three hours.

Serve. Eat the garlic too, you can pick the cloves out and squidge them onto a slice of bread.

Ok, so large onion, two tomatoes, large carrot, two garlics. That's six portions of veggies in a meal for two.

Before you say lamb is expensive. Cost £4.20 for a half shoulder of British lamb on the bone, fed two of us, should probably really have done three but I hadn't eaten all day. There was a good size bit of lamb left over which did my girlfriend for her tea tonight. That's marginally over £1 a portion for top quality meat.
