 Posted: 09:39 - 05 Dec 2007 Post subject: Roundabouts - where do I send this letter? |
 |
|
OK, after ANOTHER morning trying to get through a queue of mothers in 4x4s while on the phone doing their lipstick and ignoring all traffic rules know to man and beast, I've drafted a letter. But I don't know who to send it to?
| Quote: | Good morning.
I am frankly appalled at the standard of people's driving ability and manners when using roundabouts in heavy traffic conditions. I frequently see two types of behaviour that I would like to highlight;
1. Queuing across a roundabout - when the exit is not clear, people seem to ignore the fact that you must give way to the vehicle on your right. People join a roundabout just to occupy a space, and thus get in the 'queue'.
2. Taking advantage of the 'give way' rule, and approaching a roundabout in the right hand lane, continuing for a 'lap' of the roundabout and eventually turning left.
Both these actions result in dangerous manoeuvring that must no doubt cause a rise the rate of accidents. Also, as people use their 'right of way' argument, I see incidences of 'road rage' quite often. This cannot continue - our society is falling apart!
The ultimate answer I think is obvious. Roundabouts are doomed. If people can't take the time and trouble to use them in the manner intended, tear them up and put traffic lights in their place.
Personally, I'm in favour of roundabouts when used properly. They allow a large volume of traffic to flow very well indeed. Obviously, they consume no power and sometimes the traffic may be so light that you don't actually need to halt at the junction, which means they're 'greener' in use than traffic lights.
So, I consider this to be anti-social behaviour, so do I approach my local Council and ask them to monitor the roundabout I have in mind at certain times of the day and hand out ASBOs to 'offenders'? Or is the behaviour illegal, and I should approach the Traffic section of my local Police Authority? Or perhaps the Highways section of my County Council would listen to my request to replace the roundabouts with lights?
Or perhaps if nobody cares and it is indeed a free for all, am I to assume 'attack mode' and behave as described?
Kind regards
A. Motorist.

Ask a cop to have a drive along that route, I don't mean proper uniformed police,
There is this cop on an unmarked police pan (its blue the other is burgundy red) , who patrols outside the HG up to prestwich, he is an annoying person but tickets loads of drivers on that road, I've over taken him on the NTV once and filtered pretty quickly and he is ok with it. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. Is it a specific roundabout or route, or is it roundabouts in general?
If its the first, then send your letter to your local councillor (he/she may use it themselves and will have first hand experience of it themselves which will help++). Also send a (different) letter to your local cop shop stating that you regularly witness several traffic violations on the same route.
If its the second, you could send it to the DfT - https://www.dft.gov.uk/contact
EDIT: You'll need to include your name & contact details for it to be taken seriously |

Well it was a specific roundabout, about 6 months ago it started happening. But as people have watched others doing it on that one, the behaviour seems to have spread all along the route I take.
I think I'll take Hollyj's advice, it's the most sensible I've had so far... |

come to liverpool amd see rush hour on the strand going past the liver buildings and to be honest everywhere, yellow boxes filled up with cars, where you shouldnt stop. tunnels are an artform. from 2 lanes then a slip road making 4 lanes that are instantly up to 8 lanes that then merge again into either 2 or 3 lanes within 100 meters. scary as crap in a car, try a bike
the strand is a massive building site so everyone is darting down the either 2 or 3 lanes then all of a sudden they have decided to alter which 2 lanes you can use so you can expect the odd car to dart into the 2 yard gap you left infront and lorries trying to get into the 4 yard gap whilst bikes are wizzing down the middle trying not to die.
I used to think rush hour in sheffield was leathal till I moved here. 10 miles of hell to work and 10 miles back. I get medals from my insurance company for every month I havnt claimed. ____________________ There is no point in ranting about someone stupid because there is nothing u can do about it. Since you could die of old age waiting for a gap, I'll happily "join the roundabout just to occupy a space". The alternative is often sitting there until rush hour is over.

Would be dumb not to.
If you're not cut out for today's traffic, maybe you should hand your licence back to the DVLA...
