Are you ever 100% satisfied / happy with your work - do you ever have what you would call a "finished" project?

Im not talking about fitting small indicators, or fitting a hugger yourself, im talking about fitting something to a vehicle that is not designed for that purpose / for that vehicle and requires some form of modification to either the existing vehicle / the replacement part? Im not talking about replacing parts, or maybe even repairing parts, but modifying or replacing with parts which require modification...

I think i can honestly say, that everything i have done up to date (disregarding the small bits like indicators, huggers, brakes etc) that i can honestly class as a "modification" has never been "completed" in my eyes... There is always something i feel could be improved / changed, and i am for ever fiddling and tweaking for ever more... This causes me issues as i never feel like i can sit there and say "Yeah, its finished, im happy with it". Which is a constant pain Laughing

Does anyone else get this?

Yep, the monkey could still do with loads and whats been done may need tinkering with....

Its like plastic surgery, once you change one thing something else stands out and it then gets changed or modified resulting in another sore thumb. Its a vicious circle or is that a costly circle?

520 conversion with sprocket changes,
of an R6.
i've modded a link pipe to take 50mm exhausts
of an R6 but the link pipe was chopped and heated, bent and welded.

and changeing things from standard is modding as you've modified it. just cause it wasnt made on a CNC machine doesnt make it far for modifying IMO.
gunna put LED's all round, jack up kit, custom clip ons, blue spots on and a HID kit. and yes i love my bike.

Just incase this thread spirals out of control...

I just want to clear up the point i made - Im not talking about fitting allready modded parts... Conversions that are available to buy ready built. Thats not "modifying" in my book, or more to the point - not what im talking about.

Before someone says it - Yes, modifying is changing anything from standard, so buying an underseat exhaust system for your old 900 blade would technically be a modification, but unless you got the system from another bike / created a system yourself / that kind of thing, its not what im interested in - as the answer will always be "Yes im happy with it", because you will fit it knowing that its "fit for purpose" therefore nothing wrong with it.

Thumbs Up

i saw some clip on youtube of some chav that had cut the seat of his cg125 in half, so it was much shorter, and put a back rest for himself, effectively making it a 1 person bike. looked daamn stupid! haha.

I know what you mean - I'm the same with my bike the stuff I've done and discarded is unreal. I've just made a 3" bore silencer which hasn't come out as good as I hoped so that will have to be done again.

Modding is cool, and satisfying, but for me it's something that's a means to and end I'll never see Smile

I have some mods planned and they better work out because it's too fcking expensive for them not to. Laughing

Problem is once I've them done I'll probably think of something that could have been done better.

Then when I'm done with these mods I already have the next ones lined up. So many mods, so little money. Sad

That ped is mad, there is no way it could be comfortable with the overlap of the tail unit. Did they actually build it or just hold it together with that plank for the photoshoot? Wink

with alot of streetfighter owners, they put a bike together, then after a few weeks tear it down again and rebuild from my experience anyway. Tis good fun. Wish i had a good fighter.

I made a pair of Gixxer carbon cans fit my Guzzi. Also made various carbon bits from sheet. Bent up perspex to make a headlight protector and in the process of making an add on blade for the top of the screen to deflect a bit of blast. Turned a new brake pedal end from ali bar when the original got busted in my Cadwell 'off'.

My mum calls it 'gilding the lilly', but I can't help myself. Doubt it'll ever stop.

Ok what about individual jobs?

I think i maybe didnt explain this post well.

Basically what im trying to establish is that all those people that i see around with custom this and custom that - all done by themselves - are they happy with the work they have done? Are they happy with the way that the custom exhaust works? Or are they constantly worrying about it and wanting to change it / update it / finding the smallest problems with it because its their own work?

I didnt mean doing one job and not happy with just one, so doing a 2nd...

you know all my mods method, the only thing i was really unhappy with was the gsxr seat unit on the gs, that was just dumb, well it looks ok now that its been modded a bit more, but initially it was far to large for the bike,
i like all my other mods, but my favourite is the speed triple single sider on me zxr, it was far and away the most difficult, but well worth the effort, and the bandit back wheel on the gs was good, pods was dumb, not because it was hard, but because i made the bike so uneconomical Very Happy
what ever your thinking of doing.... i say do it!!
if it turns to custard, then fuck about untill you get it right Very Happy

Well the carbon cans (and K&N's) messed up the fuelling, so I fitted a power commander AND an aftermarket chip and haven't stopped messing with it since, even after getting a custom map done.

I am a perfectionist in the things that I do, so there is always the urge to tweak the things you've already messed with.

One mans gilded lilly is another mans polished turd. (I made that up myself, feel free to quote me)

There is always something that could be improved, even if you don't have the knowledge/equipment to do it.

My KLE could do with a much, much larger fuel tank. My Jawa could do with the engine putting back together (essentially modding because I'm attempting to make it reliable).

Yes, as my 'mods' tend to be for practical rather than aesthetic reasons. So I feel it needs a mod, I do it, I am satisfied unless I have further usage needs. Smile

I put CBR1000 forks/wheel/discs and R1 calipers in the Zed, it made a huge difference and it (as a subsystem) is complete (and I'm happy with it. there are other ongoing projects, rear suspension, some cosmetics etc that are still work in progress, but the Zed isnt far off being done. Not that I've got any shortage of other projects to get on with Rolling Eyes Laughing

well i said iv done everything to my bike, as in all the polishing (frame, swingarm, forks, etc etc) - not standard is it? so its modified

engine wise, like cut down can, etc, re jeting carbs dropped thro forks.... just everything on my bike was done by me! cept dynoing it

so, its been m o d i f i e d

im getting the R1 arse cut properly tho, cause it aint the type of thing that i wanna be `practicing` with (carbon fibre 03 R1 arse)

750 FI lump going in soon, got all the bits now

this is what he wrote did he not.......

Method wrote:
Im not talking about fitting small indicators, or fitting a hugger yourself

well, mine far exceeds just the bolt on bits

I see a lot of streetfighters, chops and trikes that have had lots of stuff done, With a little thought and patience it can make the job look much better.

In terms of my bikes, Yes i always have thoughts at the back of my mind if it will do the job and if i played about with it more could it be better. I havent done any work to my 'new' GSXR yet, Though this is the bike where i'll have no worries (other than money) to carry on doing things to.

Perhaps an example of what your talking about is i know someone who was building an FZR1000 exup streetfighter. He got a GSXR K series seat unit and seats to put on it. There was lots of discussion between us about the angle of the seat unit and i went away for my summer hols, In that time the bike was painted, powdercoated and put together. I came back and it really looked spot on, Except he had made 2 brackets that were welded on to the bottom of the subframe. I said to him why didnt you cut the bottom rails off and move them into position so they still bolt on as standard and weld them back on under the seat unit. Its done his head in since Laughing
