Europe summer '09

Hi Guys.

Planning on doing my 1st ever bike tour, summer after next once i've finished uni and before going into work full time. Well excited!!

I'm thinking a budget of around 2 grand for about 3 maybe 4 weeks of travel. There is likely going to be 3 of us.

Is this budget about right do you reckon?

are you camping, hostels or hotels, and where are you going? Your budget should be plenty, i did a month touring witha 50/50 mix of camping and hostels, and cooking a lot of my meals myself for £1k

Looking back now i should have eaten out more and tried more local foods which i would recommend doing, helps you get a better feel for the places your staying than if you cook pasta or buy a sandwich

Yeah, definately want to eat out most nights and probably this is where most of the money will go (except for petrol).

Thinking of roughly 60/40 camping/hotels. Gonna be doing stelvio pass area, through switzerland, austria, italy... maybe going down the backbone of Italy down the coast, getting to the bottom and thinking "crap, we've gotta get all the way back to Yorkshire now!"

I aim for about £50 a day, I camp when on the road as it is easy and quick, always eat out as I don't carry any cooking things.
A couple of cans when I arrive at the campsite then shower and walk to a resturant for food and drink.
If you are travelling every day take a few days off to rest before returning home. The return leg is always a bit of a downer so I tend to find a place to aim at enjoy a good journey down using interesting roads and places, take a couple of days off then go a direct route home using faster roads.

£2k should be plenty. Inc tyres and oil change I worked out as using £1k for 2.5 weeks through central Europe, Italy etc (Camp/hotel 50:50). Used about £1.3k for three weeks in Spain/France with the same sort of ratio.

Both tours were between 3500-4200 miles, with petrol being the highest single cost.

Excellent, thats much cheaper than I guessed.

Planning a route using google maps, it says about 2,000 miles (fairly direct, going through switzerland, down through como to Milan, then down the east side of Italy and ending in Sicily) so would probably bump that up to 2,500 maybe 3,000 taking more exciting roads.

I'll keep this thread updated with info on what we've got planned and stuff if you're at all interested?

O and any hints and tips would be nice too places to go, things to see

never been biking through Europe before, but i've back packed.

I'm biking it round Europe in 2008. In terms of food, beer and accomodation money, i'm only planning £1k max. My tour will involve a lot of eastern Europe. That doesn't include fuel and oil, spares etc..
