Was browsing the local news and seen this:

https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/7131176.stm

Quote:
Specialist firearms officers are to trained in January in the use of the controversial electric stun guns that hit a human target with 50,000 volts.

Shocked

Quote:
However, the chief constable said that only officers from the specialist operations branch would be trained in the use of tasers.

Glad to hear that, But still.. Shocked

How's it going down in England? Anyone had a run in or any stories about the stun guns?

all officers should be equipped with them, might stop a few fuckers being stupid.

The police need to toughen up and get on the streets more before this place turns into a bigger shit hole.

cheers
John

also, bikers should run the world, then i could get away with killing chavs who try to rob the bike.

Apparently it's a bit like the the Cs spray they are issued with, they all get it used on them before they are allowed to use it on other members of the public. Something to do with that fact they are less lightly to use it if they know what it feels like/how much it hurts.

At which there will be deaths in custody, and or allegations of torture due to its use.

Of which the IPPC (which is anything but independent) will find the officers completely innocent of any wrong doing as per usual.

At which (some) police will stamp their feet like little children asking

why don't the public not respect us?.

almost an identical thing happened with CS gas,

since there are cops on this thread....

When police go on strike next year will CS gas and Tasers be used on police since they are breaking the law by those who have crossed the picket lines? ,

The irony would be incredible.

I still think our police should have guns.

At least the ones in big cities where there is a lot of gun crime. It would save having to wait for co19 to come out and by the time they get there they are gone.

But thats me.

There will be no strikes. To even talk of strike is an arrestable offence. I leave all the politics to the federation. Oh and we use CS spray, not gas.

same thing effectively , except the UK version is more concentrate than the US version 5% vs 1% ,

Southward Emerg Med J.2000; 17: 76

Boy I wish I still had athens , best article citation device ever.

Just to poke the hornet's nest a bit more,

If there is no strike action all this will do is encourage Labour to pay even less next year,

Sort of a reverse version of negotiating with terrorists, in that all it does is encourage more terrorist acts.

Considering Im the one starting half the taser threads on here I really should add my opinion to this one, personally I'd like to see the Police here issued with tasers however my concern is how frequently and in what circumstances they are used.

We see over and over incidents in America where tasers are used on the sick, the elderly, the mentally unstable or just those question what an officer is doing.

The american police having had guns for so long now seem to be trigger happy with their new toy, this was not an esculation for them, it was in essence a step backwards.

I think part of the problem is the fact that the phrase "non lethal weapon" keeps getting used, and that clearly is not the case, we have never refered to the side handled batton as a non lethal weapon and it would seem there is a health respect for the damage it can do.

I only hope the british police can be trusted to treat this new "less lethal weapon" with the kind of respect it deserves.

Nope if these things become common they will just make it policy to taser you in the eye

Personally I'd stay in the car.

A few years down the line we will be discussing why all the Police are going to be issued with firearms.

I have no problem at all with them carrying them (Tazers), If you have a heart problem don't break the law! Wink

I've read many articles lately of people dying and many police officers from the U.S. abusing their power with the taser. I hope we don't become like that..

it's somewhat comforting knowing that only special-ops will be getting them as opposed to every officer around..

to be honest our cops are quite capable of doing serious injury with batons

a tazer may be better at avoiding long term damage

i used to know a cop, who had a cop mate who was a bit loopy

one time he hit a guy so hard on the leg with a baton, that the baton bent, and the guys skin split open all along the thigh

a tazer is very unlikely to cause that level of injury

id say the problem with tazers isnt so much the serious harm, as they way some americans use it as a first resort, rather than last resort to assert their authority

no thats the problem it is percieved as non lethal,

and as such can be used at will as many times as desired and it won't harm the person , it'll hurt them but won't cause harm in most cases ,

read the sofa story a few posts up.

How many jolts does it take to incapcitate somebody? , one two? three? , a thousand times? ,

A recent death in a Canadian air port they used it 3 times he was restrained and they used it twice more ,

In UK law reprisal attacks are not allowed, thus if somebody breaks into your home and you twat him over the head with a bat , and tie him up calling the cops its OK, but if you tape him to a chair and dish out a beating before calling the cops its not OK.

I think its a remainat of gentlemen's ethics which is obselete , pretty much like in the Falklands where captured argentines after the battle of Port Stanley were approached by the Chaplain , they thought they were going to be executed enmasse.
