Evening geeks.

i'll give you the specs of my PC first.

Arrow Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2 Memory Non-ECC Unbuffered CL5(5-5-5-12) Heat Spreader Lifetime Warranty
Arrow Corsair 1GB Kit (2x512MB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 (TWIN2X1024A-6400) CL5-5-5-12
Arrow ASUS P5W DH Deluxe SKT 775 dual-core Core2Duo Conroe ready Crossfire 8channel audio ATX
Arrow Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 (1.86ghz) Socket 775 Fsb1066 2mb Cache Retail Boxed Processor.

i'm basically wanting to overclock the processor, and make sure the ram settings are right etc.

i've been into the bios and reset everything there so I can start again.

the processor I can overclock easily by going into the bios and raising the FSB until my processor is at 2.4ghz (fine on stock cooling) I havent done it yet, but will do in a min.

now! i'm stuck on the ram side of things. my ram should be 800mhz and timings on 5-5-5-12.

when I go into CPU-z and check the settings it's running at 339mhz 5-5-5-15 with an FSB

is this right? i've seen the options in the bios to change the timing so should i just go ahead and change them to 5-5-5-12?

I'll assume it's dual channel, then?

Wouldn't that explain why it's only showing up as 400mhz?

Wikipedia knows all.

EDIT - Just had a look and couldn't find anything too specific to the dual channel architcture. Just a couple short paragraphs.

Rest assured, though. CPU-Z reads my 800mhz DDR2 dual channel ram as 400mhz as well.

Nothing to do with the fact that its dual channel. PC6400 is 800mhz, and because is ddr (double data rate) it shows as 400mhz in the bios.

Its hard to get your head arround the huge FSB speeds of the new CPU's in relation to ram timings. To give you an idea of what I'm running my PC6400 ram at here is a screengrab of mine from another forum that I'm too lazy to edit! (you may need to right click to see the uncompressed version)

https://www.divuk83.net/images/divuk83cpuz.jpg

Its posible to keep the Ram is at stock and still get a 2.66 to 3.2 with no effort at all. Idle temps are about 38 with the standard intel cooler.

Aye, that's what I was thinking of. Didn't mean to add to your confusion, N30. It's still early here and I was out a bit late last night. Embarassed

Dave this is mine

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v707/lllN30lll/dede.jpg

I couldn't get my ram to run at 400, closest i could get was a stable 370.

I turned the FSB up in the bios which took my cpu to 2.6ghz and the ram to 370.

am i right in doing that?

Not sure if the multiplier goes up to 8 on an E6300?

Some good guides on Toms Hardware:
https://www.tomshardware.com/2007/01/11/core-2-duo-overtakes-core-2-extreme/page3.html

Generally you should just take small steps when overclocking, however mine was a bit of a bodge. All I did was change the FSB from 333 to 400 and set the RAM down from DDR840 to DDR 800 in the bios and that was it, the 2 second 530mhz overclock!

When testing if an overclock is stable run memtest overnight to check the RAM is OK then run Orthos to check the cpu overclock is stable.

that says it can be turned down to x6, would it be worth doing that then raising the FSB?

Get it back to stock and edge the FSB up slowly, testing it carefully and making sure its stable (its a tedious job) . It should clock very well, but you can damgage your computer by going to far too fast. I have knacked a PSU (that was in need of binning anyway) and borked a windows install by pushing a bit too far. I see you have an Asus board as well, I have a P5KC so will probably have them same layout of menus etc as you.

Its also worth setting the ram timings and voltages yourself rather than leaving them on auto. You can set the CPU voltage but the new intels hardly need any power and will go to silly speeds on stock volts.
I would also take the 2x 512mb sticks out as I reckon it will clock better with just the 2 1gb sticks in there. 2gb of decent ram is plenty.

Anyways, I'm knackered as I have been at work all day and I'm making less sense/more spelling mistakes the more I type! Will reply again when my brain is functioning properly. Very Happy

k mate, i slowly edged up my FSB today, stock was 266 i think, ended up on 370, any more after that and windows wouldn't boot, i take it thats when i need to start raising the voltages.

Stock would be 266, if your at 370 x7 it will be at 2590mhz, which is a pretty respectable overclock. Before going any further, make 100% sure its stable at that. Orthos will generally error pretty quick. I would run it for a few hours to be sure (some people run it for days to be sure), also get several hours of memtest (use tests 5&8).

Will try and have a look at the settings to check/tweak when I'm on my PC at home as I'm at work at the mo.
