Parking ticket appeal *advice*

I got a parking ticket the other day outside my mates flat.
I've been parking there, evenings at a time for the past 2-3 years, i know it's permit parking but my bike is the width of a person and is never bothering anyone leaving their space.
This makes me think someone has mentioned something.

Thing is, if i want to visit my best mate, i will, unfortunatly there's no where else to park. Im sure im not bothering anyone by doing this, i park the bike lengthways to the curb.

The area is considered to be very nice, big regency housing around a park square. There isn't a way i can park off the road, he lives on the 3rd floor where the arrow points in the picture.

There is an appeal address, i've got to send it in 14 days, what sort of thing would you write?

Hey.

I moved recently to a block of flats with private parking, the night I moved in, the van I was moving with got a ticket. I appealed and got it overturned.

We need to get our permits from a concierge office thats only open 3 mornings a week from 9 till 12. I didn't get there till 11pm, the ticket was issued at 8:20am the following morning, given that time frame, there was no way I could have got a permit.

Find out where you're supposed to get the parking permit from, if its a case of getting it from an office on site and its closed, they can hardly uphold the ticket under those circumstances.

You can also cite the fact that there isn't a way to secure a permit on a motorcycle, it would just get lifted. There might also be an argument for reasonable use, point out that you've been parking there for a number years and have never received a ticket, can't remember the legal name for this, something to do with precedent...

Good luck with it anyway, I thought they'd just ignore my letter but they were quite quick in cancelling the fine...

I'm assuming your friend has a parking permit?

Does he get given an allocation of 'visitor' permits like in Bath? In which case there's no way you could display one on your bike safely.

There are a few bikes that park in a similar area in Bath and they usually park with their back wheels towards the curb (in between cars) and then covered so no number plate is visable... I've yet to see one ticketed.

Maybe leave a cover at your friends place?

Yeah i was going to state in the letter i cause minimal hassle for residence there due to how i park my bike.

I was going to mention also that i wasn't parked there to head into town for christmas shopping, which i suspect is why wardens are out in force at this time.

My friend doesn't have a vehicle, or permit.

Time to do some investigation then

Presuming that your friend is entitled to a parking permit as a resident, then time to get hold of one so that you and any one else that visits can park without any worry of getting a ticket.

I always thought it was just accepted that if you had a bike, you didn't need a permit.

It might even be a new parking attendant who just doesn't know. My last two flats both had private parking and I've never used or needed a permit.

As Annabella says, it would just get pinched. I'd mention that in your letter, I would say that having non-residents parking with nicked permits would be more of an inconvenience than your bike taking up minimal space.
