I signed up with them a couple of months ago (£19.99 8mb "unlimited" downloads, free line rental, free UK and worldwide anytime calls)

I don't use my home phone much (no mates Laughing ), so I haven't really had much of a problem, but my mum who signed up says she quite often calls people and hearing them speak, but they can't hear her. Or the reverse when people call her.

The line quality is lower than BT's too (presumably because it's VOIP) and sometime there is a lot of crackle, which again doesn't bother me but could be off putting if you you your phone a lot.

Regarding the BB, every so the connection dies and you have to reboot the router, but that's no great problem.

Overall, for me it's ideal. I used to pay Force9 £23 a month, and BT approximately £20. Now it's £20 for the pair. Thumbs Up

What do you mean, "VOIP". BT don't use VOIP for calls, so if Tiscali are taking over the line why would they change to it?

Their home hub should have nothing to do with regular voice calls.

And if the baker's been selling over-priced stale buns I would certainly look to getting them from the butchers if he started baking them.

I have to do that with the BT homehub every so often.

I'm no phone engineer, but afaik the physcial lines are still owned by BT, so to get around this the call is "magically" trasmitted via your ADSL connection which Tiscali have leased. When you dial a number, there is a slight pause before you get the ringing noise, and the same when you ring your number from an outside line which I assume is the "magic" part where a normal phone transmission is routed across t'internet.

I'm sure someone with actuall knowledge will explain it better. In fact, I'm pretty bored at work I'll do a Google and see if I can find out how it works. I may be back...

Openreach now have responisibility for the lines, BT sell the service. Our line has been down for a fortnight, sad to say it; but its been bloody murder without internet at home.

Anyway, We phone BT who blame Openreach for disconnecting the line, OpenReach say BT told them to do it. BT say they didn't and tell us that they can't boss OpenReach around because its now a different company.

All this because BT was deregulated and forced to split up. Ironically it would've been easier if they were one company. Doesn't matter, they're all crap. Unfortunately, we have no choice; our flat has no other service provider. Rolling Eyes

I was all for satellite internet, anything to avoid BT and/or OpenReach.
