Taken from Piston Heads, seems it is correct to.
Quote:
Just tried to insure an old clio to use as a second car round London.

First I got quote direct from elephant £180.00 all sounds fine.

Check on Confused.com (straight afterwards) and the quote now comes up as £330.

Go back to Elephant direct and the quote has now jumped to £330.

Conclusion: Confused.com adds a mark up and has an agreement with insurers that they quote including that mark up after a search is run through confused.com so it then makes no difference if you go direct or not.

So, if you use this, might be worth putting false details into confused, then, if need be clearing cookies and going to the site they say is best and getting a quote directly.

Find that hard to believe, the quote systems are seprerate so it would be impossible for one to know that the other had quoted. It's only the front end that is web based and will be affected by clearing your cookies etc.

Confused make their cash by charging insurance companies up to £10,000 a month just to be on the confused.com panel, not sure if they charge a commission on top of that but if they do it is likely to be very slight as their main aim is to be cheaper than the rest of the market.

Duh I always use a person who is of a similar occupation age and driving history of myself who lives 2 doors down.

I've always suspected that they do this and have always been pragmatic in this regard.

Been a while since ive been involved in quote systems but i think DPA stops insurance companies from using cookies.

Plus the systems are a bit more complex than that, ie the web based front end then has to send an encrypted message to the software house quote engine which arent insurer specific, ie some brokers/insurers will use the same quote engine but with seperate rates and some to insurer specific quote engines.

Plus insurers wont want to lose out on business to confused, especially not after having paid £xxxxx on monthly subscrption to be on confused's panel.

Erm, many sites that have a login or need to let people access previously accessed data use cookies and it'd be rather ridiculous to try and stop insurance companies from doing so. A lot of sites that don't need to use them do so anyway to monitor who is visiting, for advertising, etc.

Yeah i know they are used etc but the data cannot be passed on to a third party without consent which is what the confused.com setup would have to be doing.

I know insurance companies have a bad reputation but with the FSA etc involved these days insurance companies are very careful especially as DPA infrigement is enough to get an insurance company shut down.

Ah, interesting... well it seems Elephant isn't a third party because them and confused are both part of the Admiral group.

Also, if info was stored in a cookie, they wouldn't have to 'pass' it as such, they could probably just not restrict the cookie so much, or similar.

Yeah that makes more sense now.

Companies still have to make sure any personal data they obtain is kept secure and safe from a third party.

Confused havent been making many friends in the industry though with their tactics and increasing charges to insurers!

I wouldn't imagine it had anything to do with cookies. If an insurance company has a deal with confused, since you're putting in all the cars details they'd just compare that.

They'll have some sort of reciprocal information sharing contract, it'll be buried in the T&C's.

As said you aren't supposed to fix the price of milk either , if they get caught , they'll just get a tiny fine from it and do it again.

Super markets were fined 116mil , when they profiteered 270ish mil , which means even though they got caught they still effectively got away with 50% of the ill gotten gains,

if government rules were after our own best interests such fines would be 200% of the amount fixed.

Nah the FSA have some big balls and they have used their authority to close an insurer down.
