Anyone keep them?

Me and Karen are thinking about getting one, it will be our first lizard so are a little unsure. I've done quite a bit of reading up on them and they seem to be pretty easy to look after, is this the case? Have you had any issues with them?

This is no help but I started looking at gecko's read a bit took the other half to the pet shop and she fell in love with the bearded dragon's, gotta read up on them now.

My son has day geckos, obviously not nocturnal, but you can't handle them. He has a bearded dragon for that. I'm told that it's the lizard that thinks it's a dog. People even dress them up, buy leads for them etc and they seem to enjoy being handled and all the attention. He often lets it out to run around the room and it also enjoys a snuggle on his wife's lap. Bigger of course and so would it's viv have to be but I suppose it depends if you just want to look at them or interact with them.

Geckos generally look good but can be a pain to keep. Very fast and able to walk on any surface. When I used to keep quite a few reptiles it was not unusual to have a couple of escaped Geckos running around. Good for keeping the escaped crickets under control.

That said crested geckos are considered to be a good starter lizard, not quite leopard gecko friendly but close. Nice size, 8"-10", and pretty robust. You'll need a tall tank rather than a long one, since they are arboreal, taller the better but at least 2' for starters. Plenty of cover to keep the stress down, a bit of water and your away.

If your interested I've got a bearded dragon that your welcome to 'adopt' for a bit to see if its your thing?

Oh yes and REALLY dont forget the autotomy point in the tail. With most lizards like my second picture you tend to have to grab em by the tail for it to drop, but geckos can drop them very easily.

Its not life threatening but im sure its not pleasant for em. And the tail never is as pretty afterwards
