pull out and then stop? okay they didnt see you, so you have to emergency brake them half way through their turn just stareing at you.I don't get bothered anymore i just expect them to do it, but why stop halfway through, the sensible thing to do would be to carry on and get a bit more distance for me to break in.
i dont know what im doing wrong because it happend every day almost, i was doing the speed limit practicing all my life savers etc for my test so i was doing everything by the book... Neutral

so to anyone that pulls out and notices a bike at the last second, keep on going, dont stop.

The natural reaction for most drivers is to brake when presented with a dangerous situation before they have time to analyse it.

Like the people who brake on motorway sliproads when finding a truck where they want to be, I usually accelerate or already knew the truck was going to be there.

The complete lack of foresight and forward planning I see beggars belief.

Sorry for going slightly off topic.

Have to agree, 99% of motorists just do not plan what they are doing.

That is because they do not care.

They need a car to get them somewhere, that is it. They do not put any effort into actually thinking about what they are doing, how the car works, how driving should be undertaken, the effect that their actions have on other road users.

In fact the majority of modern cars are designed to insulate them as much as possible from the 'chore' of driving. Get in, sit down, turn key, push pedals, think about something else. They consider driving to be a neccessary evil, hence they apply no effort to being any good at it.

Most of the time they are not even thinking about what they are doing at that moment in time let alone what may happen in the future, and as such they have no hope in hell of effectively planning for things. Things like bikes approaching a bit quicker than they thought.

Coupled with shit observation (as they do not think about what they shoudl be looking for) a lot of stuff is a suprise to them 'he suddenly braked' 'he appeared out of nowhere'. When things are a surprise, people panic. As Mick said, the normal response to this is to brake (I did this a lot when I started learning on the bike), this is why the cars do what they do.

I've done a bit of advanced training this week, and on the course were 4 driving instructors, two Police driving examiners and a few other interested parties.

Number one cause of collisions on the road now is lack of care while driving. Exactly as above, people are in their little cocoon, airbagged and crumplezoned away from reality and hence become more selfish the moment they turn the key.

You wouldn't behave like that in the supermarket with a trolley would you? How about when you're just walking down the street - you actually look where you're going. But in a car, it's like "I'll look at some road signs. Maybe my sat-nav. Maybe through the 'square window' once in a while.

And it's making my piss boil. When will someone high in authority realise that shit driving really does kill people. Not speed.

Now we have that cleared up. Can someone explain to me, why the majority, not all but the majority of Performance car owners wearing suits, feel the need to drive like wannabe Lewis Hamilton's, without out any of his skill or talent? Then, when they nearly kill you get all agressive?

Because they know they've made a mistake and are putting a plaster on their insecure ego's with bluster. These people annoy me, 9 times out of 10 they'll look sheepish and apologise but there's always one who'll be full of unrighteous indignation.

Don't know if you're on L's. I just got rid of mine. I found people would start with the wind and piss but as soon as I took my helmet off and realised I wasn't 17, they'd fuck up pretty quickly.

People that you've described think they have a monopoly on road skill, which is seldom the case.

to be fair, anyone in a performance car, or someone who drives fast, i fell a lot safer around. They are more attentive, they might not be skilled at driving fast but at least they are paying attention. people in really nice cars, like lambos etc, are usually very attentive, dont wana scratch their pride and joy, people driving big mercs are shit drivers, (except for amg drivers) etc. the more power on hand to the driver the better their driving generally is.

I failed a test because of this.

I accellerated up the slip road onto the dual carriageway into a sizable gap in front of a car rather than slowing right down, letting him past then giving it lots of throttle to acellerate up to 70.

There was plenty of space in front of the car but he saw the L-Plate and stamped on the brakes. There was plenty of space behind me and I was going quicker than him, but he hit the brakes so I failed. Sad.

Meh...

Some idiot did this to me, as I was coming off the roundabout from my estate.
The road is a national speed limit road so he hadn't slowed down enough and had to slam on the brakes as I came round the roundabout quicker than he expected, the tosser.

Did this on my push bike earlier on the way back from work. They just don't look. Made me giggle though. Laughing

So what you are saying is"as long as you have shit loads of money to buy a flash car your a good driver? Rolling Eyes

What do you define as a performance car? 100% of BMW/Merc?Audi drivers think they are in performance cars, they are all shit drivers!

Impreza drivers are all WRC experienced, 100% are crap drivers and love gold wheels more than life it self.

95% of the so called good drivers are crap, they think they are good, you think they are good, they are not. They only think of themselves while driving and have no regard for other road users.

Just a note, I drive a VW, I do 50K a year and have done for the last 20 years. I see on a daily basis some of the most appalling driving. As Unknown Stuntman has said, they (and this includes me) are in their own little zone, the difference between me and the majority is they don't give a fuck about other road users, they are only looking after number 1.

Good luck with your test next week, sure it will be a pass this time Thumbs Up

I ride to work and for pleasure, drive a bus at work and a car at the weekends to pick the kids up so can see things from both perspectives.

I will say though, out of experience with myself and other like minded people, that motorcycle riders who drive cars as well tend to have a far better perception towards potential hazards and other road users.

I think the road sense that you gain from riding is naturally transferred to the car. Would be a good stepping stone to make everybody pass a cbt and do a very minimum of 3 months riding on the road with a bike before putting in for driving lessons.

hmm well now i wasn't saying they were good, they are better than the average house wife who taxi's the kids back and forth. they tend to be more attentive because they take pride in their car, whereas someone in an big merc doesnt, its just a nicer way to get from a to b. they are by no means better at driveing fast, or safely etc, all im saying is at least they have their eyes open.

heres one for you, would you rather be followed by a chav in a chaved up nova or an old granny in a corsa? i go with young at least he has quick reactions Shocked

Time they removed some of the insulation from the boxes, like radio's, Sat Nav, and mobile phones.
If they had no toys to play with they might take a bit more notice of the world around them.

I'v had two cars pull out in front of me from a side road only to slam on at the last second if it wasn't for this and they kept on going i would of gone over there bonnet for sure. Alls you can do is assume a car is going to pull out so have your brake covered and you'll be able to slam on in time.

Drivers underestimate the approach time of motorcycles and are more likely to pull out in front.
Motorcycles travelling at urban speeds (<40MPH) are less noticeable than other vehicles.
Drivers search for what they expect to see – motorcycles make up <10% of urban traffic and are therefore not likely to be anticipated.
It is easier to spot an object moving across our visual path than one that just gets bigger.
The further away a motorcycle is the harder it is to judge the speed.
Although it is believed that wearing high-vis clothing, choosing a bike with an increased frontal area (e.g. a full fairing) and riding with dipped beam on during daylight increases the chances of being seen, there is no research to support this.
Motorcyclists tend to be at the front of traffic more often than cars (due to their ability to overtake and filter), which subjects them to the risk of right of way violations more often.

In addition the process many drivers use for joining a road at a junction, can fool the rider into thinking that they have been seen. Many drivers will focus ahead at the junction, concentrating on braking and changing gear rather than looking for a gap. When they arrive at the give way line they will make their assessment (look right, left, right again and go). To an approaching vehicle it can appear that the emerging vehicle is giving way, only to have them pull out at the last moment.

The old granny all the time!!! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

The chav in the nova will try to overtake and then cut you up, assuming your on a 50cc and he is in a 1.2 Razz His mates will be hanging their arses out the windows and that will piss you off. Shocked

The granny, she is behind you like the chav, you will leave her standing. Unless she is in a Lambo and has an attitude and hates all bikers Twisted Evil Evil or Very Mad

No matter how its dressed up, the majority of car drivers just dont look.

I dont care how hard it is to judge the speed from a distance, it doesnt suffice as an excuse. When I am on my bike at a junction I make sure its safe to pull out and not 'possibly okay if that bike is far away and moving slowing'. I dont wear any hi-vis stuff either. If they arent going to see my dipped beam then they wont see a crappy jacket.

I hate the way everyone thinks motorbikes are always to blame because they are fast etc. All of my near-misses have not been due to speed, but in fact at low speeds and due to car driver errors.

True for 50% of owners. Many buy an Impreza because it is loud, that is it.
