Just had the neighbour knocking on the door, shes reversed her C2 into my baby. First thoughts are that it's been written off. The car isn't worth that much by offical prices. Her C2 is much worse. By the way mine was jacked up at the rear and how the OS wheel rim had scraped the kerb she took a decent run at it.

So, what's the way forward here? I'm worried that if i go the offical way that they'll take him away! Mad

Get some quotes and give them to her. If she doesn't like the sound of them or too pricey then go through the insurance and by the book? Looks a tidy little car and from all accounts a little something special too so would be a shame not to get it back on the road as A1.

12 year old car? Looks like a write off but doesn't mean you can't keep it.

Do you want it looking 100% again or would you be happy to keep it as it is, with a few hundred in you pocket, considering its not worth much?

They're putting it through a body shop to bash out the dents as much as possible. My insurance company isn't bothered at all as i'm tpft.

Looks like it'll get fixed up out of insurance, with some cash to cover resale value.

Yes, old car. Worth £500 max by the books, but apart from one patch of rust it was a good shell.

They're 10 a penny, so come sale time in a year or so no one will touch a bent one. Sad

Your insurance has nothing to do with it, you claim from her insurance and they sort everything out.

Is this what they've said? To fix that properly would cost a bit more than most people realise. Its quite hard to get a flat panel back to its original shape so normal practise would be to change the panel. On top of this its got to be resprayed to match the existing paint.

I guess that was the point I was (badly) trying to make. Personally I would have had a bung off the person who drove into it and continued to drive as is.

I guess the problem is that CG is looking at selling it next year. Needs to be as good as possible to get the best price.

So true. Wink 1997 reg (mines 1995) is worth £285 to £545.

I don't want a written off car. I don't want a bashed car. Thumbs Down

I can't be bothered to strip all the goodies off it in the winter. The suspension, fueling, cam, brakes & induction are worth more than the car. Exclamation

OH car was bashed but a van - found a note on her car.
'apparently' his dog jumped on him, forcing him to swerve and smacked into her.
It wasnt that bad TBH but the insurers came out, took a look - As he bashed the side something was moved? In the engine (So they said)
Classed it as a write off, she got £800 for a 'N' reg Suzuki Swift, so she wasnt too bothered.

We used to have a mint red XR2, a copper reversed into it. And she told us to go get a quote from a body shop, as soon as we got to the body shop we was told it'd be wrote off, even though it was only the door, it doesnt matter that it was a minter, and probably worth about £1000 on the market, to insurers its worth the same as any xr2, £400, £600 quid, so we never bothered.

The copper ended up just giving us £150 so I could get another door and spray it myself! Very Happy

Ok, so an Engineer is coming next week to take a look at the car to determine how bad it is. The company who's sending him has already told me it's a write off. He's hinted that it's going to be a total loss.

He's probed me about my thoughts on the value of the car and what I'd want as a settlement. My answer was "well, no comment really, as it's not down to me to decide on how much it's worth. I not a car dealer and I've never considered selling it."

He's wanting to settle the claim on the day that he's viewing. He's said that they don't really want to take it off me, so the settlement will be cash+keeping the total loss car.

Two ways to take this:

Arrow Just get the car valued on what he says. i.e. 82K, N reg, clean inside & out, no service history.

Or

Arrow Try and bump up the value myself by trying to 'sell' the car to him, as in all it's good features. Explaining why it's worth more. You've then got a car that has 82K, N Reg, clean inside & out, 4 good yokohama tyres, new discs & pads up front, recent rear drums & pads & handbrake, recent clutch, recent engine rebuild, new radiator, new bushes, new CV joint, new exhaust, stack of receipts for oils & fluids. (ignoring the suspension and fuelling mods that'll be stripped)

Is it worth sorting out all the old paperwork?

What's the point, if he has it off you he is going to scrap it. Doesn't matter what's on it, book value is all he will pay for it as it is an old car that's not worth anything to him as he is working for the insurance company.

Keep it and break it down if you want to make money but you will need to undercut the scrappy and advertise as its not a mega popular car.

Have a look for some advertised for alot of money, then when he offers haggle saying you've had a look at how much it would be to replace. I did this when they came to look at my mums car and we got £350 instead of the £200 he offered!

A fair bit of what you have listed as good points are just normal wear and tear service parts. Just the difference between bottom and middle book price.

Good advice on looking for similar cars for sale. Being honest about it, how much do you want to get?
