Gutted,

Was out on the bike today enjoying the sun. Decided to go to On-Ya-Bike in Aylesbury and on the way picked up a screw in my back tyre. The tyre was about 2 months old and I had done 380 miles. On-Ya-bike said they woudn't plug it (apparently most places don't these days) but they had a new back tyre in stock. £120 quid Sad
They did fit it then and there though, which was good of them as they are not a tyre specalist.
Gutted that I have had to replace the tyre so soon though.

Whats the lowest milage you have had before having to replace a tyre due to misforture? (just to make me feel better Smile)

hmmm depends on where you had the nail i think whether they decide to plug it or not, i picked up a nail in my rear few weeks back and it went in at a funny angle, but my tyre man still managed to plug it and its been fine since.

Don't think it was leaking, maybe I could have got away with it for a bit longer.

At the end of the day I knew it was there, didn't have any way of fixing it if it did go down and really didn't feel comfortable on the bike. I had a big off on my mountin bike about 10 years ago when a front tyre blew out. I was doing about 30 at the time and it hurt. I still have the scars on my leg. As far as I was concerned the screw was a time bomb and I was not going to be happy on the bike until the tyre was fixed.

Would have saved a few quid if they could have plugged it. but hey ho.

fair enough, i suppose safety is better than saving money.

personally i would have screwed in a slightly larger screw and left it at that. but look at my bikes, all bodged wrecked shells of things Very Happy

Bridgestone Sad

I bought the tyres in Bedford, but really didn't fancy riding the bike 60 odd miles to the tyre place with the thaught that it could suddenly get squermy at the back and I would have to call mr RAC(tm).

Are you joking, or just retarded?

I'm assuming that Goat has a sportsbike, since his tyre cost £120. Not a good idea to ride round with s fucking screw in there is it? Imagine the consequences if it let go.

Shame they wouldn't plug it - had mine plugged a couple of weeks back for £30. Was a tyre off plug mind, so is apparently as strong as the original tyre.

However, the last rear lasted under a week, and less than 100 miles before I punctured, and could find no-one to fix that one in time. £140 lighter after that.

Naked SV650, but it doesn't really matter what you have got, a tyre going at 30 is gonna hurt.

I've got a diddy plasterboard nail in the centre of my rear 2CT. It's only 20mm by 1mm so I'm going to leave it in there, as plugging it would create more damage.

It's gelled in place but has a tiny air leak so I have to pump it up every day but hey, even ragging it to Boxy and back last sunday didn't seem to hurt it.

Are you being serious about leaving it? Especially as it is losing that much air you have to pump it up each day. Your tyre is PUNCTURED and it will only get worse not better. The odds of that tyre failing completely at high speed are significantly increased and you are prepared to risk being launched off your bike for the sake of having it repaired???

I've had a screw in my rear scooter tyre since I bought it. I've clocked up 600 miles with it in and who knows how many miles the last owner did.
I don't lose any tyre pressure so I've just left it.

Bah I had it happen within 50 miles.

Bastards wouldn't even do me a deal even though I have spent over 10,000 there including buying the bike. Laughing

I am the master of getting nails in tyres.

On my ZXR250 - i literally went down to london from loughborough - 120 miles, went back up, was filtering home on the epinal way (A6) and noticed the next day that it was steering weird. 220 miles, ring my mechanic and said - mate i need a new BT092! He was like i only just fitted it the other day. Took the tyre off and it was like hooked, penetrated at an angle and bent into a U shape so was a double puncture!

On my ZX6R - 400 miles upon owning my new bike - tyres were about 300 miles old - so 700 miles total, slow puncture as a result of a pen nib! i mean FFS.

I dont think you can get "tyre on" plugs done anymore unless you do them yourself.

And £30 for a puncture repair. you got your pants well and truly ripped down there mate! Confused

Ive had a puncture in every set of tyres ive had on my bikes. I think its where im constantly overtaking in the central marked off areas on roads which are always covered in bits of glass etc.
Repaired them all, Balanced them up myself. Cost nothing.
Job done.

However, The Viffer rear wheel goes straight on the car wheel balancer at work.
And then Front wheel I balance up by lifting the front of the bike on a paddock stand, Slackening off the front spindle and pinch bolts, removing calipers so the wheel can spin freely and just balancing it up that way. Thumbs Up

Got a nail in the rear BT020 on my VFR within 80 miles earlier this year.
Not just any nail, this was a 4" galvanised nail!.

I pulled it out then fitted one of those stab-through bungs. I took it canny for the first few miles and ikept stopping to check it was ok. Before long I was just riding as normal.

About 400 miles later, I got a second nail in the same tyre. Again, fitted a stab-through bung.

Continued using the tyre until it was dead including a couple of flat-out runs (I mean flat-out, wrong side of 150mph) and protracted riding at three figure speeds.

Had a look in there after the tyre was taken off. Nothing to worry about, all still well in place.

So for a 50mph, 100 mile maximum tyre bung, I'd say they work ok. Friends have done similar.

That said, I can think of no good reason why you can't fit a heavy duty tube in a punctured tyre. My MZ supermoto used to chew its way through a 150 section metzeler MEZ1 every 2.5-3k miles and it had a tube in.

Sure, the tyre will hold the heat more but I can't see this being anything remotely like an issue unless you were pushing it very hard on a track.
