Appears to be a good idea but in practice you'll have a face full of steel bar.. allthough were you not in a full face then your chin will have taken that force.
The fact that bar is removeable is a worry, if it was a continuous bar running the circumfrence without any brakes it would probably be not too bad..
Another interesrting thing, on another forum somebody said their optician commented about his bikeing, he said he could tell he rode and had an openfaced helmet because his cornea was covered in scratches from the road crap hiting his eyes.. ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

Interesting point raised, imo because you can see so much more theres far less chance of something being missed and subsiquently ran into/over by.
Another thing is in the event of an accident and your airway is blocked what happens then? helmet off? what if its the only thing holding your brain from falling out like a gruesome trifle? or watch you suffocate?
I use a flip up lid which in effect might as well be an open face (not sure if they test them as open?) but going the whole way of open faced elmit would make me nervious..
haveing said that if i was going touring i'd get myself an open lid for the reasons mentioned above. ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

There is also the false sense of security people get from being enclosed in a full face helmet, which when it comes down to it, is a piece of thin plastic filled with polystyrene. It can encourage more risk taking. They think because they spent £350 on a helmet, they aren't going to be badly injured in a crash.
I am personally under no illusions about my helmet. In a high speed crash it is going to be little or no use. If I hit my head on a stationary object at anything over 20mph, I may as well not be wearing it. In a significant proportion of accidents it may even cause additional injuries to my neck and upper spine.
I wonder what would happen to the serious/fatal accident rate if full-face helmets were banned . ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

I think helmets are more to prevent injury with sliding down the road / bouncing down the road rather than stopping dead from any speed although i believe they do help.
I think it was bazza who posted a picture of his lid after a accident in one of the last helmet debates threads where his helmet has significant damaged to the front/chin piece and he would have been royally screwed if he wasn't wearing one or if he was wearing a half faced helmet.
Although i doubt this will change your opinion as you seem to have a hatred of all helmets |

OK not uk based, Some Stats
Personally i would ride with a helmet no matter what.
We argue here that gloves/leathers/textiles should be worn at all time while on the bike, to protect from damage. So it then figures that the head needs the same or more protection due to its exposed nature.
Not sure i like the idea of steel bars infront of my teeth, if you bounce them on the road they will bend and if bent far enough will push back into your face, unlike a current fullface helmet which would spring back. ____________________ Just because my bike was A DIVVY, does not mean i am...... |

I've been wearing my Schuberth J1 (open face, with a full length visor and a chin bar of some non-steel material) for about two years now, and I feel much safer wearing it than I do wearing my full face Schuberth S1, even at motorway speeds.
The reason: I see so much more with the J1. Having such a huge aperture means I don't lose any vision ahead or around me. So, while in an accident, I might be better off with a full face helmet, I think I'm less likely to be in an accident caused by my own poor obs when wearing the open face lid.
A tiny movement of the head, if that, is all I need to do a life saver, in fact my IAM instructor was complaining I don't do any until he tried the helmet and realised I don't need to move my head. I now do that anyway to signal to the vehicle behind that I'm about to make a move but only for that reason.
These helmets are tested to the flip-up standards, and the way I see it, if those weren't safe, coppers wouldn't be wearing them. ____________________ My other bike's a Monster... |

fantastic, thats exactly the kind of thing i was thinking of
thanks
for low speed stuff in traffic, i think the extra visibilty that you get in an open face helmet, actually increases safety to some extent, as explained by paivi
i think i might use one when commuting in summer
i think i'll keep an eye open for a second hand schuberth j1 on ebay ____________________ colin1 is officially faster than god |
