Here's a hypothetical situation.....

You have 5 grand, you walk into a suzuki dealership and before you stands a shiny new sv650s in jet black and a gsx650f, proudly displaying the gsxr blue and white colours.

Both give you 650cc's with change from your 5k but they offer you slightly different packages. You're looking for a practical bike that will still keep you entertained at the weekends.... handling is important.

Cost is relevant- the gsx is 500 quid more to buy and the sv is only group 10 insurance, so it represents good value. Having said that, its comparatively underpowered, doesn't have as much space for pillions and is less comfy.... but does it make up for it by being more fun??

which do you go for?

I'd take my 5 grand and buy a sportsbike and a commuter and a dirt bike.

I am going for a GSX600F, but only on the basis that i've found a cracking deal on an '02.

Look foward to hearing from any responces.

ok good answer....

but what if you don't have 5 grand and instead you would be looking at suzuki 0% finance...
On top of that you have no garage so you struggle to house 1 bike and you don't want to pay insurance and running costs for 3 bikes, you want one that does it all....

Erm..

I'd probably plump for the sv.

But then everyone would hate you, I'd do it anyway. Bloody keyboard warriors.

How much money would mr hypothetical have? Say if he had £500 spare he could just buy a hack and save some money for what he wants?

If i had 5k spare it'd be going on a brand new CCM FT35, so i'm of little help here.

Though having had the SV, i'd probably go for that again.

I know this isnt really relevant - but looks wise, the sv looks so much sexier its unreal. GSX is one ugly mofo.

Power wise, there isnt gonna be a massive difference, not that you'd use on the road. And we know sv's can keep up with a lot of higher powered stuff when ridden well.

I suppose a gsx might aswell...but I just dont like em. Its like buying a CB500 and saying "Yeah man, my CB is like a sportsbike, because I painted it orange" - nothing wrong if you can ride it fast obviously - but just, I dunno, Im trying to justify having an inert dislike for the gsx Laughing sorry. Thumbs Up

The cagey hypothetical bit was because I'm just considering options at the moment.... I have a crash damaged hornet (see my blog link for details) that I might be looking to part-ex. I recently moved and now I have a pretty long commute (80-or-so miles a day) so I could do with a bike with a fairing for the A1. It has to be practical but also fun for weekends and I'm finding it surprisingly hard to come up with a list of bikes that genuinely do both... I narrowed it down to the sv650s since its very cheap to buy and insure but still a laugh... but the bike journo's all reckon the new gsx650f is a great bike and worth considering as a sporty daily ride...

the funny thing is, I agree completely.... it may be a great bike but it has no sex-appeal, its like the fully-faired gs500....

An sv650s is far more appealing emotionally, I really like the looks and considering that you can pick up an 05 sv for around the 3 grand mark its amazing value, but with less bhp than I'm used to, I wonder if it would feel like a step backwards.... I need test rides.

But if i had to, it would be SV.

buy the sv on 0% and stick the 4.2 grand in the account and gain your 5.5% interest a year.

Set up a cash isa and tell them to withdraw from it. At the end of the 3 years you should make about £200.

I got a new SV . Brilliant and highly enjoyable but needs the front springs replacing asap.

dont get a new bike on finance even if its 0%.

You will be far better off getting a bank loan for £1500, and buying an sv650 for that price. There will be hardly any depreciation when you come to sell it, so although you will be paying interest on the loan, you will still save money in the long run. Monthly loan payments will be less too.

I own an '06 SV and my other half has a '56 Bandit...which is almost a GSX. Sort of...

Having ridden both considerable distances, both straight motorway and twisty I would go for the SV for the following reasons...

Arrow I prefer its looks to the GSX
Arrow The SV isn't toothpaste colours
Arrow The SV sounds way way way better than the GSX ever will - providing you get a half decent can (about £100 or so from Fuel, Beowulf, eBay)
Arrow SV is 20kg or so lighter, and if you need to push it anywhere its really noticable.

Having said that - the Bandit did 1500+ miles around Europe 2 up and never missed a beat. The riding position is more upright than the SV and it you want a commuter then that is definately worth considering.

SV, the GSX650F is a faired bandit, I'm not a fan of bandits in the slightist.

Also seconding the faired SV, as mentioned, get it via a bank loan if need be, it'll work out cheaper in the long term. Spend the change on a tidy end can and you can't go wrong.

I think the pointy SV looks better. More like a proper sports bike.

The SV is great though. Had one for a hire bike and it was good fun. Miles better than the GSX IMO. Nice bike to have restricted aswell if thats the route you are going down. The only reason I didnt buy one myself was thats its a bit boring and I think I saw 6 or 7 other people on SV650's in the same day once.

I personally wouldn't buy anything brand new, you are going to take massive depreciation hit.

I'd opt for a second hand SV for half the price. You should be able to get finance on used bikes.

SVs and Bandits are budget bikes; the depreciate quite quickly. Not so great if you're buying new (you'd loose, what, £500 as soon as you wheel one out the showroom), good if you're looking for a couple year old, less than 10k example for half the price.

On which I'd opt for? The SV. Not the finest of bikes but I'd prefer one over a Blandit.
