Just after a bit of advice really.

About a week ago my bike ('97 Yamaha XJ600N) started doing this weird thing. I'd be riding along on my merry way and gradually the clutch would start biting closer and closer to the bar, untill pulling the clutch lever didn't do anything so I had to either not use the clutch or pull over and adjust the barrel adjuster on the handlebar for the clutch lever. It's been doing it ever since and the I've almost adjusted the barrel adjuster all the way out so I'll have no adjustment left very soon.

It also sort of jumps a bit when the clutch does bite, almost like the chain tension is too loose or a sprocket is loose but I checked and double checked all that and it's fine.

Does anyone have any ideas what's happening? Are my clutch plates worn perhaps? I have no idea about engine internals and I described the symptoms to the best of my abilities so any help is much appreciated!

I've been using the clutch as little as possible lately, clutchless upshifts and downshifts etc and only using the clutch when I've come to a stop but I'm worried I'm doing some damage to my gearbox like this.

Adjust the clutch cable at the engine, far more adjustment available.

I'm gonna do that tomorrow if I get a chance but I'm a bit more worried about how fast it seems to be using up all the cable, I guess it'll probably get me through to the new year when everywhere opens back up properly but I have no idea what I need to buy/do to it to fix it long-term.

The nuts on the cable adjuster at the engine may have come loose, meaning its slackening.

Is the clutch slipping?

my clutch acts weird in 6th, if i hold the lever lightly it goes slack then tight again when it jumps out of gear, it did this before and after i replaced the clutch, and the clutch cable then i put it to configuration. And it still does it now rendering 6th gear useless, i've been told its my selector fork or teeth on the gear, my mechanic said it was the fork. Dont know if yours is suffering the same, just thought i'd share my symptoms too.

On my gsxr there is an adjuster bolt at the engine casing and also at the lever. try both. Some machines its a fine line between working properly and being sh1t.

I've broken the clutch cable on theway home from home in the center of edinburgh... had to put it in 1st and press the start button to start.... and use the kill switch to stop....

If you clutch plates are worn then you'd feel loads of slipping when taking off. My gsxr plates got so worn that cyclists could beat me off the lights... thats when I knew they had to be changed...

Thanks for the replies.

Well the clutch isn't slipping but it's basically riding like a dog. I don't know how to properly explain it without letting someone else ride it really. I'll see how it goes over the new year and try and make it last then take it apart if I can sort out some other transport for a bit.

Thanks for the replies Smile Merry Christmas!

Sounds like the cable is breaking down, each time a strand snaps it unravels and gets a bit longer and needs adjusting. Eventualy it breaks.
