Yeah I did. And I'm not with Vodafone now, cos they're shits.

IMHO, find a place that sells you the phone outright, and get out of a contract. Get the upper hand. They're all out to rape your wallet. Do some sums.

If you're out of their 'contract term' you can leave at any time and you don't have to give notice.

O2 do a good pay as you go - lots of options for texts or minutes free.....

The "upgrades" they offer you straight off are usually crap.
However, the normal game is for them to say sorry - you say you're really looking for XYZ handset, and they'll put you through to their promotions department, which have a bigger budget... Very Happy

Last one I did, the guy said he couldn't do me a free handset in the one I wanted (N76), but could sell the handset for £45 and give me 3 months of half-price line rental (worth, oddly, £45) instead.

Run some numbers, make some choices, see what other people will offer, and give it a punt - you'll probably make most milage if you try and get them to match one of their own "new customer only" deals which is what mine was, effectively. They'll give you 1-3 months free crap extras (data, insurance, TV, etc), so make sure you cancel those before the end of the first month though - it's a 2-minute job on the phone, thankfully.
