Hello all..

its been lurking in the spares pile for a while now, equipped with a 1.5ghz something (ooooh) which is more than any others I'm running.. also discovered I have memory it runs.

Sooo get it all plugged in, board lights up, button pressed.. fans twitch then nothing. No noise, nothing else moves.

Tried another psu, same thing, tried with memory, without, cards taken out e.t.c.

So is it dead? or something else worth trying?

Have you tried lifting it 6" off the table then dropping it? Surprising how often this works. Maybe give it a good whizz with a can of air?

Aka the second of six stages known to the IT professional world...

Stage 1 - the 3" drop test. Ensure power is off. Apply sufficient pressure to create a 3" air gap between device and desk top. Stabilise for a second or two then suddenly remove pressure. Ensure air gap is fully closed.

Stage 2 - the 6" drop test. As above, excepting fellow IT office workers have now been informed of possible "acoustic fallout".

Stage 3 - the 12" drop test. Should only be used in circumstances where the above two tests have proved ineffective. As above, but H&S require you to assemble a small crowd of fellow IT workers to make sure the slightly- more- dangerous procedure is safely executed.

Stage 4 - Random power test. Again, you'll need an audience. And maybe break out the rubber gloves now too. Apply a generous helping of mains power to the device. Say, in the region of 220 to 240 Volts of Alternating Current should do. Remove power. After a short while, apply power. Repeat for 30-40 iterations.

Stage 5 - 4' drop test. Ensure suitable footwear is worn. Crowd no longer applicable. Remove unit to a secure and safe environment, preferably with no windows. Elevate unit to approximately 4' and gently but firmly apply a full 1 (one) atmosphere of gravity to unit by removing counteracting force.

Stage 6 - IT Newbie (aka tea-bitch) test. Give the unit to the new guy and tell him his job depends on it working.

Think its going to be the "drop into a large skip" test..
Allthough it is nearly 7 years old as it is :/

Ive managed to get one working finally, its a bit screwy, actually thought it was completely snuffed it.. but seems to be going ok at the moment..
500mhz Grrrrrr

As a backup theres a dual 3ghz, 3gig ram uberbastard downstairs that isn't being used Shocked (but then games might be installed and uni failings follow Sad )

Thanks for the advices, i used to repair pc's and its suppriseing how often a good spang would get them going.. badly seated cards e.t.c. perhaps? and cans of air upside down were teriffic fun (when your not paying for them)

When BBC brought out the Archemedes computers, they actually sent out detailed and specific instructions on how to do a "6" kick and blow test." in the event of one cutting out unexpectedly. This was due to a poorly seated chip in the first batch out.

I distinctly remember in an early computing class at school how you'd get an occasional "Fuck sake" muttered under the breath as someone lost the last half hours work followed by a "THUMP! Baaaaa, bip.".
