I used to get them when I was a kid, got to about 6.00pm today and realised I couldn't see properly out of both eyes (Like when you stare at a bright light) so took 2 solpadeine (Paracetomol/Codeine/Caffeine IIRC) and went to bed for an hour, think I've missed the headache mostly (I can feel it if I cough) and I feel a bit sick.

Anyone else suffer from them? I really hope I'm not starting to get them again Sad

Hiya,

Yeah, just over a year ago I started getting Migraines with Aura. I get the same as you to start with, like you have been blinded by a bright light but for me, that then turns into flashing zig-zag lines for about 20-30mins which basically means I can see nothing for that time but the blind spot and the zig zags! Then the headache kicks in and generally lasts for about 6 hours or so but it wipes me out for the next day also. Thankfully I havn't had one for a couple of months now as I had about 4 in a week and started taking 'Feverfew' (you can get it from any health food shop). since taking it I have only had one and nothing since. I also t.hink Bananas may be one of the causes of mine. It is usually a combination of 3 things, mine (I think) are bananas, stress and bright light/monitors (LCD monitors seem to be worse for some reason). It's a pain if I get one at work as I can't work for the rest of the day which can be a real pain.

It's strange when you talk to people about migraines as people that don't get them just think they are a bad headache but they are SOOOO much more than that! It's like someone is inside your head hitting it with a sledge hammer!

Anyway, hope you don't start to suffer with em too much. Keep an eye on what foods you eat. Bananas, Bacon and Hot Dogs are well known triggers, sometimes chocolate too but I seem to be ok with that thankfully! Apparently a green apple can be good for preventing them also?

Nausea could be the codiene rather than the headache itself.

Could be, but generally nausea is a symptom of migraine over a normal headache. I generally chuck every time I get a migraine! Sad

Yes I have suffered migraines for 2 years now. Worst one was when i was at work once and it my my first one and I thought I was going blind everything went white and then i had a dot that was wavy to see through! lucky I worked beside the emergency doctors and went over with help. Found out it was a migraine starting then after that i was sensitive to light in the shop them strip lighting.

When i eat chocolate or drink alcohol I get dizzy and feel sick then I get the pain i also get nervous and edgy, I have to stretch for the Migraleve tabs but they always work as they clear the nausea well also (pink ones). Last year they would last for about 4 days without meds I was in agony thought I had a bloody brain tumor they where that bad. I know when they start with the dizziness now. Not nice having to reach for the pain killers but they have lessened now that I know whats causing them, chocolate. Crying or Very sad oranges are a no no and caffeine.

Yeah last time I had a migraine I was sick over 70 times (Mum counted for me!) That was a good few years ago

Gonna have to stock up on this Solpadeine this is the 2nd migraine I've avoided by taking it as soon as I get an aura and going to sleep.

They're definately more than bad headaches, last time I had one if someone offered a gun I would've taken it if I was strong enough to hold it! They're unbelievably nasty!

I get migraines occasionally and have done for around 30 years. Sometimes I go months without one, sometimes I get one after another for ages.

Sainsburys do an extra-strength painkiller that seems to work for me. If I take a couple when the aura appears, I usually just have a really bad headache (note to non-migraine sufferers : think of the worst headache you have ever had, multiply it by ten, then get a small child to bang a drum next to your ear for 24 hours solid. A migraine is much, much worse than that).

I've been trying to work out the main trigger for them. At the moment, I'm working on the theory that citrus fruit is a fairly major factor (started drinking fruit juice at lunch to try and be a bit more healthy, ended up with a week of migraines. 5 a day, my arse!).

I was prescribed Migraleve back in the 80's, which is bloody expensive on prescription. Turns out Boots own-brand Paracetamol & codeine are exactly the same, but a tenth of the price.

I have only ever vomited once but heaved the rest of the times. Did you ever try migraleve? they have the anti sickness in the pink ones when you take them at first sign of migraine and then later if you still have it its the yellow ones. I hate the aura I get with them, cant go out anywhere. I am allergic to sulphadeine and co codamol are bull I took took of them last night for a tooth ache and they never worked.

That's exactly what I thought when I had my first one! It's horrible when you really think that you are going blind. You just don't know what is going on. Nasty. I am calmer now about it but I can feel myself starting to panic when I think I am getting the aura even though I try to stay calm. Apparently a can of coke (non diet) can help the aura go quicker. Also a wierd one if you gag/are sick when you have the aura it dissappears and then slowly comes back. Wierd! Something to do with the blood vessels in your brain expanding when you gag/sick!

I hate the headaches but I do find the aura worse in some ways. The pain I can deal with but the temporary blindness is just horrible.

I have never had that level of blindness after that just flashing and light sensitivity. It was embarassing as I was working in Hein Gericke at the time and had to get someone to walk me to emergency doctors and was crying and all. I went into a sort of shock after that and felt like someone had hit me on the head., was given meltez I think you called them they melt in your mouth. Had to go home after that was to tired to go back to work and scared. The aura sparks my anxiety off to.

Yeah, I have had them for about 5 years now...
used to happen once or twice a year
The other week I had 3 in the 7 days Shocked

It ALWAYS starts off as visual, I get flashing circles of dots, and the middles of those circles are blind
That lasts about 30 minutes, no pain
Then when I can see again, I get a banging horrid horrid head
And pains behind one eye, could be either eye. Varies
And then the nausea

I have to sit in a darkened room. I either take Migraleve or Nurofen Migraine Pain

If I am lucky and have taken the tablets as soon as, it can be gone within 4 or 5 hours, but then I still get the residual pain if I cough, like you mentioned. That usually stays until the next day

Crap isn't it!?
I am not as bad as my sister though. If she eats dark chocolate she is in a black bedroom in bed for a week spewing her guts up! Sick Thumbs Down Shocked

I get them but only if I'm exposed to strong perfume or deodourant. I get a skin rash off them too so I reckon it's some kind of allergic/defense response.

Only visuals though, starts as fuzzy round the edges and can progress to total white-out which was scary the first time it happened, especially since it happened at school and the school nurse thought I was trying to skive off class despite me becoming progressively less able to see by the minute.

When I think back on it, that was shite. Someone aged 13 with no history of migranes whatsoever goes to the school nurse complaining of 'funny' eyesight and dizziness which gets progressively worse over the course of 20-30 minutes to the point you can barely see or stand up and they tell you to go back to class. Fucking good job I didn't have meningitis.

During my GCSE's I got severe ones due to the stress of my exams. I used to get a really bad headache, then it wold disappear and I would completely clear out my stomach then feel rough for a day. I got paramax (paracetomol with something in it that makes it dissolve quicker in the stomach) and if I took these as soon as I got the blurry vision I would only get a bad headache for about 3 hours.

I've not had a migraine for about 6 months now so all's well and good.

I'm never complaining about a headache again! Can't say I've ever had a migraine, but have you all thought about seeing a doctor? I don't want to scare anyone but a friend of mine died last month from a brain haemorrhage, she had been suffering from headaches and migraines all year.

If it's suddenly started to happen just go to the doc, have a MRI and then you know it's nothing serious, and don't be a pansy and wait to see if it stops, just go to the doc.

I've had migraines for about 20 years, although less frequent recently.

I start with something very similar to a stiff neck, which goes on for about two days.

On the third day I don't want to do anything! Can't stand to be in a brightly lit room, can't cope with any noise, don't want to talk to anyone, a proper miserable sod I am. This stage lasts for about two or three days.

My Dr says my migraines are stress induced, so I try to keep away from stressfull situations/don't get involved in arguments etc.

I find that ibuprofen and paracetamol taken alternate every two hours works for me, as I now know how it starts, so can treat the symptoms before it gets too bad.

Suffer from them really badly.

Starts above the eye until you go bright white and blind.
Always comes with nausea, a sense of vertigo, and the pain is unbearable.

I usually find myself smashing my fist into a wall or something just to shift the pain away from my head.

Usually always sick with them too.

End up laying in the bathroom in the dark, sweating, freezing cold, shaking, and barely having the energy to move to throw up again.

I find ADVIL MIGRAINE (i buy it in the US)
Usually manages to kill them within a couple of hours, but this is after taking around 3 capsules.

Gives me heartburn too.

I've suffered from these cuntish things for years and i'm only 19.

I used to blame it on the electrical generator at my old house that was the otherside of the fence.

Also i find yellow wallpaper makes them more frequent?!

HTH Thumbs Up

OH suffers badly, to the point she either throws up or has to go to bed. Eye sight is poor, piercing pain on the side of the head. Some days we cant go out if she get its.
Her mum also has the same problem.

I hadn't had one in over 5 years until the week before Christmas. A combination of shopping in Ikea then being phoned by my least favourite IT support client just pushed me over the edge. Que partial blindness and nearly chundering on the futons.

Also the reason I got knocked back from joining the navy a few years back.

I suffer from migraines quite regularly and its because i burn the candle at both ends. Having had so many of them i now carry my migraine tablets with me constantly, just so i can see again.
Not only this but now i can sort of predict if im going to get one. If i know i am/ have been burning the candle at both ends then i obviously risk getting one. However, if i know myself that i have lots of stuff to do (sort of a 'got to keep going' mindset) then my body will keep going as such until the day where i know, and it knows i can rest. If i dont recooperate properly on that rest day then the next few days succeeding im very likely to get a migraine. So i make sure i rest properly! Simple.

My eldest daughter suffers with them, one was so bad she was hospitalised, they thought she was suffering from epilepsy, turned out it was a fit caused by a migraine headache. She has to avoid things beginning with 'c', chocolate, citrus, caffeine as they are definite triggers for her. If the refresh rate is incorrect on a monitor she suffers as well

I've also been told that things that can cause migraines are very fatty foods (so try and avoid cheese and chocolate) and lack of sleep can also bring them on.
Don't mix skittles with coke at 11 in the morning, that's how I got my first migraine.

Can these migraines happen to anyone, or are some people more susceptible to them than others?

I think this is what causes mine too.

I haven't had a migrane in years, until 2 weeks ago, I got one whilst at work. I thought maybe because I was stressed out or something, but just realized that I sprayed some cheap mens perfume to cover the smell of a manky fart I just done. Ended up getting a pain in the front of my head not too long after, which over the next day gradually developed into a migrane. I remember that a few years back this same thing happened when I sprayed that same perfume too (possibly to cover up the smell of one of my rancid farts again!).
