Well.. I'm minding my own business this morning getting ready for work.. Leave at 6:59am and the bike starts first flick on full choke, Lovely!

7:00am
bikes running fine

7:05am
Miss-time gear change and I hit quite high revs

A very noticeable smell of what can only be described of yuckish egg smell enters my helmet. (No idea what this was, couldn't smell on bike when stopped AND no I didn't fart Wink )

7:06am
Lose power, I think it's carb icing as it's been happening alot recently

Throttle does nothing... - O shit?

Dead... I find myself pushing the bike onto the pavement.

So I investigate into the bike trying to sniff for this eggy smell but can't smell anything, I try starting the bike and she fires fine however there is no smell of petrol what so ever from the exhaust so I check my tank and see that there’s a good couple quids worth there but give it the benefit of the doubt and blame myself and end up pushing the bike 1.3miles to the nearest petrol station.

After recovering from near death I fill it up, bump it a couple times but still no luck.. No smell of fuel what so ever!

Do you have any idea what could of happened? Have you come across the mysterious egg before?

Cheers
Bardeey (Thanks to bike no work today Thumbs Up)

normally when your burning coolant it smells of eggs Razz but i doubt your head gasket has gone from a mistimed gear change though Razz

Ok... Would having no coolant have this effect? Come to think of it I haven’t checked the oil in a while :O but it can't be that or else the bike would have seized and wouldn't even turn over? Maybe screwed the valves up..?

About to go up and rip it to bits to check it out.. More suggestions please Very Happy

In a severe over-rev situation you can get valves bouncing, hitting pistons and bending. I have no idea if your little burst could have done that.

Did it cut out dead or splutter to a halt? An eggy smell could be a burnt out electrical component, or as mentioned, a dead battery, possibly caused by a faulty reg/rec allowing too much current across the battery.

Difficult to say without knowing details but I would go for an electrical check first (battery, reg/rec, fuses etc), then check the engine itself.

FWIW, if you'd bent a valve or broken something internally, I'd expect yout to notice a lot of mechanical noise, not just a funny smell.

Cheers

Ok.. So I'm back from playing with it for 3 hours.

I completely stripped it down expecting the worse.. Checked all valves etc but nothing was wrong, turns out I had a pretty near dead battery (Was on optimate all night) So no idea why it was dead seeing as it trickles and started first flick, it would turn over just not enough to make it run.

And my tank was full of crap so the vacuum wasn’t working which obviously led to fuel starvation, so I got to play the fun sucking game trying to beat the petrol in mouth.
Think I was lucky seeing as I was able to ride it home! Very Happy

Rotten egg/ bad fart smell sounds like a catalytic converter. Were you in traffic? If so its probably just from a car you were following hence why you couldn't smell it again.

It sounds like classic carb icing, but I'd have expected it to start again after a few minuites rest to let warm air from the engine get around the carb.

The eggy smell is Hydrogen Sulphide. This is almost always due to an electrical problem, so that's my best guess. I've heard of people smelling this when their reg/rec fries, but I haven't experienced this myself.

Of course the smell may not have come from your bike, and the problem could literally be anything....

eggy smells prob from the battery, as people said if your regulator/rec has gone, or you had a short it may have overcharged / cooked the battery.
