I usually start the engine on three quarters choke, have a fag (5 minutes or so), back off to half choke after a minute or so, and when I'm ready to ride away I can take the choke off entirely.

Is this bad practise? Should I ride away immediately?

You ride a C90? Neutral
Start it up and just redline first gear for 10 seconds. Wont hurt the thing.

Personally, I just put full choke on, start up and ride away, but letting the choke pretty much power the bike for a few minutes.

Until it's at 60-70 degrees C. That's usually how long it takes for me to put my ear plugs, helmet and gloves on. I used full choke until 40 degrees C, then back it off as much as I can until it's fully off at about 55.

On my Hornet used to start it up on full choke then take it(mostly) off and ride away, it never needed much choke.

It might seem excessive letting it warm up for so long but I find that it tends to idle roughly and stall for the first few minutes if I don't.

I'm no expert, but that sounds fine. After 5-10 mins im pretty sure it'll be nice and warm.

On a week day, i only warm mine up for about 2-3 mins on half choke. Any longer and i'd be late for work. I always worry about it not being warm enough though, so usually take it very easy for the first few miles. Barely go over 3000rpm.

Start the engine, while the choke is on my rear wheel spins so I shut my garage door and then as soon as the choke knocks itself off I ride away.

Its a C90. It won't have a temperature gauge, and it doesn't use plain bearings in the engine. It uses needle roller bearings like a two stroke does. This ultimately means the engine life is shorter than an ordinary four stroke, but its less prone to problems from low oil or low quality oil. (hence its popular across the globe!)

So, if you don't need to have a fag, just ride off I'm sure it won't do it any harm!

Most bikes I would probably just ride away anyway. As long as you keep it below a third of the rev range I'm sure it will be fine.

I don't do that on my NC30 though because it doesn't ride all that well on choke, and I have to shut my garage and put my lid on etc... But I certainly don't wait until its 100% warm. As I said, I just don't thrash it until it is warm.

Someone on here (I believe it was Robby) said that bike engines don't get properly warm unless there is a little bit of load on them anyway. All you're doing by idling the bike is warming up the coolant.

Start it up (no choke, ever) then run between 2-4000 rmp till it steam comes out of the exhaust. Depending on how cold the morning is depends on how long I do the above for. Then leave it to idle while I put helmet gloves on etc.

Then ride off without taking it above 8000rmp (bear in-mind it redlines at 16,000)

Start up, wheel it backwards out of the garage, close the garage and lock it (plus additional locks), sort my phone and put my earphones in, zip up jacket, lid on, gloves on and by then its warm, but I'll still take it easy, not only for engine but for tyres etc..

Start up with full choke. Leave for a few seconds to see how the bike's revving. Adjust the choke so it's about 2500 rpm and not labouring at all.

Put all my kit on and close garage door. Takes 2-3 mins max.

By this time its usually warmed up to take choke completly off.

Start it, rev it for like 5 seconds till it runs a bit smoother, stick helmet and gloves on, ride away. That easy.

If it's dark I start the engine and leave it running while I unchain bike, put lid on, back out of yard, and then ride off.

I also keep the engine running while I chain it up as I do quite a few short journeys and I don't want to be running the lights off of the battery (I need them to see what I'm doing!)

the thundercat, a while, start it up on full choke till it runs smooth, give it a few revs, roll it off till its happy ticking over, then ride gently for 10mins.

the CCM doesnt need choke really, so fire it up, get gear on and ride away, being gentle with the throttle.

i remember the days of having a scoot, fire it up, ride down the road full whack with a big cloud of smoke bellowing out the back end Very Happy
