Ive just organized my Mums funeral, nothing flash, just your basic cremation, i Hearst, 1 limo etc etc. basically the same as my Dad had in 2002 at a cost of £1600.

We have gone with the same company, expected it to be a bit more but wait for it.... £2400 hows that for inflation!

May I offer my condolences.
To be honest mate I would tell them I would want a better price. Is it a cremation if so you could bring down cost be asking for a cardboard casket looks like the real deal but not as much. Are they doing an embalming or something or are they putting her on show for last goodbyes.
If it is a burial to be honest its still a bit steep but there abouts right.
For burials now a lot of people are being buried in whicker caskets which are eco friendly.

Good luck with it all.

Sorry to hear that mate, seems about the right price, my grans was quite expensive and that was basic.

They make alot of money, they only pay between £50-70 for the coffin and charge around £700 to us.

We tried that one, apparently cardboard coffins cost more than you basic chipboard jobby as they are not mass produced, you pay a premium for the environmentally friendlyness of it all.

Dying's an expensive biz Sad

My cat was in the vet for around 8 hours last night before he died, and that cost me £125, which obviously I would willingly have paid much more had they kept him alive. And the cremation is going to cost us another £110.

I would give it all, and more, to have him back Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

i think the problem is like that of weddings.

Most people dont want to be accused of doing one on the cheap, so companies will charge what people are willing to pay.

I heard it's dead expensive.
It's the sort of thing you would not think to haggle over since you are in the emotional state of berievment. Undertakers prey on this.

Sorry about your mum. Karma

I've told my parents it is bin bags on the door step and the Council can shift them. Wink

I know that soon I will need to start thinking about a small plot of land for my parents. Dreading the costs really.

I never got the idea of buying expensive coffins as you see them for a day then they are put in the ground to rot. Something homemade would do me, even the Christmas tree box would fit me in it as we found out while putting it away. I think people cash in on funerals as you feel guilty if you dont cough up for them for your loved ones but the truth is your loved ones probably wouldn't want you going into debt over it. Again as in the other thread sorry about your mum powelly.

and hellkat sorry about your poor kitty. Crying or Very sad

I always used to tell my mum that, but she said the bin men were idle bastards and wouldn't take her.
I think it cost about £2k when she died 4 years ago and that was a pretty basic package, 1 hearse, 1 car, a coffin & a service.
My parents had a policy with the co-op that covered some of the expense, but afterwards my dad found out the policy only covered the first one to die. it was a joint policy insofar as they were both covered, but only 1 claim was allowed or something like that.

Sad news.
Ask for a breakdown of the costs and see what you might be able to save on. Do you really need a limo? Those are the sort of items that can cost the most. It might be cheaper to borrow or even hire a large car yourself and designate a driver for it.

sorry for your loss.

if you want a headstone, then it only gets worse. £1500 for your basic granite headstone - to up to £5k for something extravagant.

even a 12" x 12" can be £500.

dying is indeed expensive Sad
