chunkielad, have you had any problems with the Alfa? I was thinking of getting one but I hear that they are really unreliable and servicing costs a fortune. Is this the case?

None at all - they are much better if you get them after the Fiat take over. Basically the same as any other car regarding service costs and it drivesa very well compared to the Escort I had which had the same engine size but was newer!!!!

I have had Alfas for years. Had my current Alfa for years! Got a 33 P4 (the 4wd variant of the Alfa 33). Goes OK as they weigh bugger all (even though it has 4wd it is still substantially lighter than the 145 / 146). In a lot of ways build quality and reliability suffered when Fiat took over. They replaced the old 75 as soon as they could as Fiat could not see how to build it at a profit.

Reliability / rust / etc is not bad. From the mid 1980s rust has certainly been not as bad as a Ford of the same age.

Spares can be a tad expensive, but they are cheap compared to bikes.

Problems with the newer ones (ie, 155, 145/146, GTV, Spider, 156, 147), which are based on the basic Fiat Tipo chassis is mainly the front suspension bushes that last about 40000 miles and then fail. The first you know about it is when the insides of the front tyres start to wear very rapidly. Required new front suspension arms as the bushes are bonded to the arms. Around £100 each arm from Alfa, about half that from any half decent specialist.

The 16V TS engine had a recommended cam belt change interval of 72000 miles. If it survives that long you are lucky. The belts are fine but the tensioner bearings fail taking the belt out. The later ones have revised bearings but few people trust them beyond 50000 miles (think the revised ones use a white pulley wheel, the original ones are black). Also the timing variator tends to give up the ghost, and the engine lands up sounding like a diesel.

Also they have quite a small sump. They burn very little oil, but it does increase with age. People get used to never checking the oil then around 80000 miles it uses enough between services that the level drops too long and it takes the crank out.

I have driven a fair few 164s. These are big cars but last well. Got loaned one by the local Alfa specialist once which had done 192000 miles. Still went like the clappers, and everything except the sunroof worked.

We are toying with the idea of buying a 155 or a 146 to replace the Clio. Does help that they are both basically the same car underneath and I have the workshop manuals for the 155 at home.

Like I said the 146 TS is great I love it - drives well and goes fast compared to the newer escort I have. Much comfier on longer journeys and seems to have a similar fuel consumption too!!!
