As far as I know, and I may be wrong, sorry if I am, but by derestricting a moped, it then means its not a ped, and it means it needs a number plate light etc, I'm not sure, try searching for other threads on the New Bikers section.

Or try a different insurance company, ask them about it. If they say no, then its probably not worth it, as you won't be insured, and thats quite bad if you get pulled over.

Hi

Legally you need to be 17 and it needs to be under 11kW. But insurers have no way of knowing if it is under 11kW (unlikely it would be anything near that) and they generally don't like modifications.

Having not seen a V5 for a moped in years I am not sure whether there is anything on there that would need changing.

All the best

Keith

At 17 you can ride a 125 so they are wrong.

De-restricting is a modification to the vehicle so technically your insurance wouldn't be insured but you are riding within your licence so it is void that way (like most 16 year olds on mopeds).

So I guess de-restricting it is like other bikers not saying they have a sports exhaust....

I can't recall having any of my problems when I derestricted my scooter way back in 2000, well it was 7 years ago!

Only thing I will say is you have to be 17 with a CBT, you don't need a full bike license unless it is over 14.6bhp or has more than 0.22kw per tonne if my memory serves me right, which for a 50cc scooter is highly unlikely.

When I was 16 I had my scooter insured as de-restricted Laughing (it did have my Dad on the policy too). I was with e-bike then. Never had any dealings with them off than when I took it out and cancelled it and they where fine.

Edit:

Agree Bennetts are shit, with them at the moment. Their crap, taking money when their not meant to and then taking 4 months to give it my back. Cancelled my insurance randomly. pfft shit.

Another vote for Carole Nash here, but they aren't really younger rider friendly. As a rule of thumb with them you need to be over 21 with atleast 3 years NCB to get anything sort of reasonable!

Would hope it would have more than that. A 100kg scotter with about 0.03hp sounds worrying Wink .

Not sure there still is a limit on power to weight ratio for learners (certainly used to be under the old 9kW learner laws).

All the best

Whoops just realised that the Power to Weight Ratio only applies to restricted licence holders and learners on sidecars, not standard learners!

And its 0.16kw/kg!
