So...as reminded from another post, what do you when you see one of these beasts strolling along in your way....

depends on the rider, Wink ,

however after multiple bad experiences ie:

Arrow being sprayed by horse manure by fellow riders

Arrow skidding on the stuff when you find it on a corner

I'm more inclined to just get past them quickly as poss..

I think horses are dangerous anyway in that they are living creatures and thus can freak out and go nuts.

Drop down 5 gears is the option for me Mr. Green

Granted had a hottie at school get flipped off a horse and kicked in the face.

Still hot though, some men dig scars to.

I Saw a horse spaz out a few years ago on a busy NSL road a couple of years ago throwing the rider clean off and run uncontrollably accross the road in front of traffic.

You would stand no chance in a battle of horse or bike!

It always raises the question of why is it nececary for a horse to be on the road as it is a clear danger to other road users Question

Imagine if a bike manufactor made a bike that could stop itself or accelerate and turn throwing the rider off with no rider influence!
It would be banned before it even got past the concept!

If they get banned for being dangerous then bikes will be under fire next Sad

if you sneak up on a horse by clutching the bike and coasting then its more likely to spook. Just relax yourself and give it plenty of room and go past it slowly and leave the engine on i've found the best way, horses should be allowed on the road, i have nothing against them, but i wish they would be more desensatized to vehicles before being on the road as it freaks me out when i see a horse. I dunno how that horse will react, thats what scares me most.

I give them as much room as possible (i.e. if no vehicles are coming the other way then go on the opposite side of the road) clutch in and coast past them.

Some personal Stats:
I've been riding all kinds of gee-gees on the road for 20 years never fell off or had an incident.
Wrote off one bike and crashed another twice.

Bikes are dangerous get them off the road..... Razz

Best way to spook a horse is to surprise it.
So do not ive fast when passing and keep the noise down. Once the beast has seen you it will be fine to pass. There are one or two psychos out there, but think of them as 'Character of the Road'. Laughing

I just slow right down, like all animals they are quite unpredictable and you should always be very cautious around them. Normal nod at the horse rider too, always seem appreciate they I have slowed down.

Always clutch it in a long way back, drop down the gears enough to match your falling speed, give them absolutely as much room as possible, keep the clutch in until they are well behind, and then release. Its nice to be considerate to other road users, don't you think?

Fair few riders around here in rural Hampshire - and I do like getting a wave of thanks from a young, well reared filly. Wot wot.

Upset the kitten on the horses back and she will never ride you Embarassed Thumbs Up

Give them plenty of room, have seen a horse kick a car that was too close.... Horse was fine, which was more than could be said for the rear wing of the car...

I've got both friends and family that ride horses so I try my best to be considerate, not to mention, most of the riders I've seen around have been far too cute Wink

Me and JKR were riding along a single track road up here when we saw a horse coming the other way. Slowed right down well in advance but the thing was pretty jumpy so we stopped (about 20m from it). The poor thing was jumping all over the place, so we turned off the engines (weren't even that loud anyway), waited a min for it to calm down then pushed past it. The (fit) rider said it was that horse's first time seeing bikes! We pushed the scooters a good bit up the road before even thinking of restarting the engines

What do you do if your exhaust is a little rude? Thinking

I just ride past slowly, giving plenty of room with the revs as low as possible.

Horses are OK on the road but why do they have to shit so much, and always on a corner.

i always slow down and coast past..

however had a bad experience with a group of 'hunters' this year.
they came onto the road ahead (about 20+ horses) and so i slowed right down and followed for a few minutes.
i was given a wave by and so started crawling past very slowly when the second to last horse started going nuts, rider was trying to control it, it was slipping about and moving backwards, sideways/all over. another rider gave me an annoyed 'come on' wave as if to say it was my fault and so i started to ease a bit futher past right over as far away as possible when it suddenly reared up, slid backwards and right into my path. i slammed the brakes on and foot down as this annoying mammal dance all around the road in front.

some of the other riders were shaking there heads and apparently (according to my pillion) calling me some obscene names.

anyway i managed to creep past as the rider got a bit of control of it and she apologised.

anyway it was way more dramatic being there, words dont seem to do the whole situation justice.

Never past one, but I'd just slow down and keep the revs low and steady. Don't want to shock it by revving around everywhere.

Interestingly horses are the only things that have " Right of Way" on the Queen's highway. Everything else is just "Priority." Cool

Slow down, ride wide.

If you are afraid of horses, you might want to make a different plan. Horses can smell fear and some will spak out if you're terrified of them.
