I think it's time I shared my most recent modding antics with you.

It's not that I had the money burning a hole in my pocket, I just wanted to try something different.

This is how the Transalp dash looked before, stock.
https://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w214/shnesdi/DSC00051.jpg

So I buy one of these after some thought on how to mount it.
https://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w214/shnesdi/ACE-3991_300.jpg

Without wanting to leave a gaping hole in the dash cut-out, I decided to make a backing plate for the unit.
https://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w214/shnesdi/DSC00055.jpg
Theplastic plate is from a bin that was lying in the garden with all manner of decaying creatures and leaves living inside and a large family of woodlice living underneath, the bin was set upon with my angle grinder to provide a nice solid bit of plastic, to which a bracket has been made from flattened out half inch aluminium tubing, (also lying around waiting for the world to come to an end) this provides the fixing holes to mount the whole thing to where the original dash was.
The horizontal is for stiffening the bin as it was curling inwards, hence the bar shape on this piece has been left as a half bar.

This is it mounted to the old holes on the frame. The neoprene surround is just to prevent vibration, not a thing I thought of, just a thing I realised I needed after a test run. Laughing
https://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w214/shnesdi/DSC00072.jpg

So, the wiring, well, it was surprisingly simple really, the instructions are in English which is a start and if you really get stuck, there is a bloke called Craig who sells these units and he knows his stuff.
https://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w214/shnesdi/DSC00073.jpg

Before the dash surround goes back on, I get a bit more bin and cut a couple of discs to fill in the holes where the temp and fuel gauges where. At some point I may mount speakers in those holes and have a big gay goldwing type stereo thing happening Smile
https://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w214/shnesdi/DSC00070.jpg

And here's the result Very Happy
https://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w214/shnesdi/DSC00074.jpg
Here's a "mood" shot for ya, couldn't be bothered to wipe it after it rained Wink
https://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w214/shnesdi/DSC00077.jpg
The unit was around 150 quid but it's a great piece of kit, 2 resettable trip meters, volt meter, temp level (in bar and digits), revs in bar and digits (though revs in digits is like watching a lotto machine on speed Confused ) then there's the usual crap like fuel and speed and a clock to tell you how late you are.
All in all, I'm happy I have it, mainly because it's not stock, yet it doesn't look out of place.

Much like the noisy baffle free Arrow that I got from a written off alp.
https://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w214/shnesdi/DSC00049.jpg

Hope this has been useful to some of you that might be thinking about putting sillyness like this on your bikes, I'm not stopping there, as I said, I already have plans for an amplified speaker system that will hide away behind the dash, Maybe that's abit too much Neutral

One thing I must show you at some point are my Cree shotguns for daytime visibility, I love them, they are an evolution from these luxeon ones I made a year ago from 4 torch heads and the enclosure from a vhs cassette box.
https://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w214/shnesdi/DSC00139.jpg

There we are, Sorry if it's a little long winded.
I'll post a couple of pics of the shotguns if I remember.

My mate put one on his monster, it works like a push bike speedo you have to put a magnet on the wheel

Yeah, you can use a magnet unit on the wheel but that's just for rides that don't have a speedo cable installed, if you do, and you do, then you simply unplug the speedo cable from the back of your clocks and attach it to a pickup that plugs into the acewell, then all you do is measure the wheel diameter, find out how far 1 rotation of your wheel takes you in mm then after some maths (that i've forgotten already) you enter the number into the computer and it shows your speed Thumbs Up

That bit's quite easy to set up, as far as the revs go, you either take the cable that fed the original clock or use the provided cable to wrap around one of the ht plug leads, dial in how many cylinders you're running and off it goes Very Happy

That looks really neat, but you cant help but think that it doesn't belong. I wonder if you could fill in the rest of the area where the clocks were to make the dash seem a little less "lonely"?
I'm not knocking it or anything. You've done a great job.

Although they don't seem to advertise it online very well, heine gericke in Harrow was where I got mine, It was around 8 quid, very reasonable but not waterproof, So I put sunglasses and a little cleaning cloth in there, It will carry a lot more of course, always best to have the room and not need it Wink

If you don't have the brace, I think this was and still might be the cheapest around https://www.triumph-online.co.uk/sw-motech-handle-bar-brace-triumph-tiger-handlebar-brace-1099-black-or-silver-734-p.asp.

Hope that helps.

Owdamer, Thanks, I know what you mean, It does look abit small and lonely, To be honest, it was the last of my concerns, In fact it is just a little bit on the piss too, left side lower than the right by a couple of mm, These are things that I will probably tend to when the weather gets warmer.

I'll keep you all posted on any more worth while things, and if anyone wants to ask any questions about fitting or wiring these things, I'll gladly try to help.

Cheers Thumbs Up

Wikiwiki - you harrow based i take it?

So the installation is literally plug in and play? was there a lot of splicing involved?

It does look pretty smart and i've been tempted by one on the ZX6R since its got the old gash analogue clocks and having something illuminated at night would be ideal?

How did you wire in the LED shotgun lights? I've got an idea of shoving them behind the ram air grille so i can run without main beam during the day.

S'all good stuff Thumbs Up

I'm about 30 minutes down the A406 from Harrow, I'm around the Bush Hill Park area.

There was quite abit of splicing, but once you pull the clocks away, you just pull the connectors for the indicators for instance, splice them and join them back with the acewell wire soldered in with them, either tape or shrink the join and that's it, The wires didn't take too long once I got going, around 45 minutes.

There's a couple of ways in which you can mount these things, I've seen naked carry them off quite well and easily installed by the looks of it too.
If you want to mount it in place of clocks that are fitted into a fairing you have 2 choices I suppose, go naked or, get your thinking cap on and work out how to best fit it into the existing body.

The shotguns wired straight from the battery using 2.5mm speaker cable, (went for the 2.5 so I could draw more at a later date if I wanted to).
The feed is interrupted by a relay hidden in the fairing and the trigger for that is from the running/position light.

Good idea about the hiding them in the fairing bit, I don't know the bike but the problems I had were full lock forks hitting the back of the lamps, finding a suitable mount in the bike, I found a screw either side of the nose under the headlamp to which, I attached a hosepipe or jubilee clip with a hole in it, then simply slipped the lights in and tightened the clip.

I can't offer any pics for the shotgun's build but if you need any more info or would like to check them out in person, give me a shout.

Top notch mate Thumbs Up

Karma given accordingly. I have the brace the same as you and one of the main problems I find with my Alp is nowhere to put the odds and sods like phone, wallet, house keys etc. I dont like boxes on the back and a tank bag is near impossible unles you spend a fortune at baglux and get a leather tank cover first.

I've got a givi t419 and a t429, both are magnetic and both hold on very well to the tank even though it's shaped funny, all the magnets clamp onto the tank!

I've heard alot of talk on xrv about how magnetic tank bags don't fit the TA but I have found no problems with the two givi ones.

Bugger baglux, more trouble than their worth IMO, if you want a tank bag, and they're always handy, just get a magnetic givi one, real good quality and the t429 takes more than it looks Thumbs Up

That, I must say looks rather dashing Wink

So sorry, couldnt help myself Very Happy

Seriously though, sounds pretty mint for the money man, you always hear about 250/300 quid digital read outs, but that looks like a lot of kit for 150 Thumbs Up

Its looks really good I think, I think you should build it up around the outside with stuff that really isnt needed at all, so it looks like a ships cockpit. Like a Barometer, and one of those balls that shows Altitude etc Thumbs Up I dont even know why. Im at work and bored. Im sorry.

Cheers, as I explained earlier, The "idiot lights" are wired by pulling the originals and cutting into them, you then simply rejoin them and add the acewell wire for that circuit.

Do you know if it has an easy way to change between wheel diameters?

When you go through the settings, there will be the option for wheel diameter in mm from 4-4000mm approximately. I believe it's in either 5 or 10mm steps.

Some such things let you have several different settings, so you can easily account for swapping wheels, or even bikes.
