PostPosted: 09:10 - 03 Jan 2008    Post subject: MOT and number plates? Reply with quote

Sorry if this has been posted before, had a quick look and couldnt find anything.

Ive just heard that its now required for an MOT that any bike made after 2000 has to have a license plate with the address and postcode of the dealership it was sold at originally at the bottom.

Is this true as my mot is in march and i would like to pass first time if possible? I brought my bike privatly if that makes a difference?

Cheers Thumbs Up

not heard anything about that.

Like you say, if you bought privately how can you have a shops name on it.

I bought my 10r from Robspeed, its still not got their name on, its got a little plate on it. Cool

Hi

Must have the postcode of the supplier of the numberplate on it.

All the best

Keith

For what reason would they need to know where the bike was bought?

To stop companys selling Illegal plates i guess.....?

But that means they can still sell for off-road use i assume.

As said before, probably to make sure the supplier isnt selling dodgy plates that are too small. I intend to go for a smaller plate on mine when the rear work is done but I will be keeping the stock plate to slip back on at mot time, just like the can. Thumbs Up

So i only need the post code of the place i brought the plate from?

May have to order a standard one and just scrape the double sided tape of after mot. Does anyone know how hot mot testers are on this?

Then again you do not need a numberplate for a MOT, you can do it on frame number.

IMO highly unlikly you'd get pulled up for that in an MOT, don't even think it is a requirment

The local tester showed me the manual and was saying that he reads it as, aslong as he can read the plate at a resonable distance then it passes Cool

Hi

Think the MOT rules on this have changed recently, but not sure on what to exactly. Also depends on the age of the bike.

A numberplate must have the suppliers postcode on it (and a BS stamp as well I think). But as is typical of many badly thought out laws there is gaping hole in it with anything else not being a numberplate there isn't really anything to stop "show plates" being sold.

All the best

Keith

Put the bike in for a test anyway. If you do get failed becuase of the plate, you can get one from halfords easy enough. Then you can just turn up at the MOT center and point.... Thumbs Up

My bike is a 2002 and has a plate from the shop that sold it to me not the origional dealer. It passed the MOT with the plate on so I don't think its an issue.

Bloody silly if the origional dealer goes out of busness anyway.

Not sure about anyone else, but if the dealer pisses me off I go to great lengths to remove any "free advertising" from my bike/car anyway.

The original dealer is irrelevant. It is postcode of the supplier of the numberplate that needs to be on the plate.

Yeah did some more reading on it today and its so the police can trace who brought the plate if the car/bike was used in a crime or cloned etc. Looks like i will have to get another plate, though i might pop down and book it first to see if they let it through anyway.

I passed my MOT loadsa times on my bikes with small plates. I think roryplates on ebay sells small plates with their postcodes on it which i think is rather dodgy - both my bikes passed with 8x6's so i guess that as long as they had the post codes, it would be fine.

It is the original supplier of the numberplate that matters

All the best

Im not sure if its the same for bikes but VOSA launched new regulations for number plates (cars) to bring the mot inline with police regulations on plates but they made an error and the regs were 'suspended' until we next get a special notice saying that they are now enforce.

Keith is almost right, but for once I can prove him wrong Smile

The rules changed in November 2007 with regards to number plates and one of the things brought in was that you did indeed have to have the suppliers name, postcode etc on the bottom and also the BSAU number.

This has now been SUSPENDED until further notice by VOSA in the middle of November, for reasons unclear.

This affected all vehicles first used after 01st Spetmeber 2001 e.g "51" plate onwards

Cool so dont have to worry about it for now which is nice.

Surely this means though that alot of people will be going out and buying new plates when the law comes in?

All cars/bikes registered from the date will have these plates anyway, the only ones affected will be the people who try and put plates on to "look cool" with illegal lettering etc. All number plates produced legally from this date will have had these detials on so to get one without you would have had to ask.

Well thats not true. My dads car recently had a stone crack his plate. He went to halfords and brought a completely legal bog standard set of plates (also did the same a few weeks back for my mums new custom reg) and neither of them have any markings on them except for the registration.

I can imagine there are alot of people who will have to buy new number plates when this law comes into place.

Check carefully (the marking for the BS mark and postcode are tiny) and if not take them back and complain.

All the best

Yep had a look and there is no markings on them at all. Ive seen the markings on other number plates and they are tiny but i cannot find any on my parents plates.

None on mine either, it is a small plate if that makes a difference (not to small, easily readable from a distance and 2 lines rather than one. Plus its a legal font).

Take it back and complain. They have sold you an illegal plate.

Yes it makes a big difference. PRetty much anything non original makes it illegal and then it won't have the suppliers details on it.

All the best

Cheers, ill get my parents to do that.

Just one last quick question, as my plate is stuck on with double sided sticky tape, could i celotape a legal plate over the top just to hold it on for the mot? or would they fail it as not being on secure?
