Anyone remember the 'Long Way Down' wars of last year? Well, without wishing to add fuel to the fire.....for Crimbletide i got given a book called 'Jupiter's Travels' by Ted Simon, which supposedly served as the inspiration for Charlie (the tosspot) and Ewan (the Star Wars killer).
I've not got too far through the book, but it's proving to be an entertaining read - essentially it's the tale of Ted's 4 year, 63000 mile solo round trip across the world during the 1970's on a Triumph named Jupiter.
He doesn't have a film crew or support vehicles, it's just him & Jupiter, and so far it's a great story which i would recommend to anyone thinking of setting out on a bike tour, or anyone who has done a bit of solo travel.
Top stuff!
Thumbs Up

I got this for crimbo too. I agree its a great book. Incredibly well written - more of a window to the soul than just the trials of the actual biking part. I'm about 1/3 of the way through it and really enjoying it so far. I like the way he expresses the same sort of worries everyone else has - makes you realise that it doesnt take anything special to do these trips other than the balls to pack the bike, fill it with petrol and set off Smile

Just one thing though - the bike isnt called Jupiter - its the name given to Ted Simon by the Indian spiritualist in the prelude. And its a Triumph Tiger from memory Smile Some telling little insights, including one comment along the lines of 'if the japanese ever get a foothold their better engineered bikes will destroy the british bike industry' - this was in 1973.

Has anyone read the book covering his follow-up trip? I'm assuming it's a great read but haven't got round to it yet.

I bought Jupiter's travels quite awhile ago and I agree its a good book. I also bought his follow up book but I only got part way through it as I began to lose interest in it.

I'll have to give it another go at some point.

It is indeed a cracking read, and those who enjoyed it may want to take a look at 'Lois on the Loose' by Lois Pryce. She jacked in her job as a runner at the BBC and travelled alone from the northernmost tip of Alaska to the southernmost tip of South America on her Yam XT225 Serrow.

Ted Simon himself said 'It's a great read'. Thumbs Up

Yes, I read "Dreaming of Jupiter" a few months ago and enjoyed it more than "Jupiters Travels", but both are well worth reading. Only £7.19 now from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1847441815/ref=s9_asin_image_1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=1RMT34YJQ7BFWKDNE92K&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=141221691&pf_rd_i=468294

I preferred "Mondo Enduro" though Thumbs Up https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mondo-Enduro-Ultimate-Adventure-Wheels/dp/1904466281/ref=pd_sim_b_img_5

Cool, ta. Thumbs Up I enjoyed Mondo Enduro as well. Not as well written as JT but the trip more than makes up for that.

Jupiter is in Coventry Transport Museum (unless it is on loan to the NMCM!).

You ride Gixxers so therefore your opinion is automatically suspect... Razz

Jupiter was referenced in either Long Way Round or Journey Beyond Reason and will be in my book collection at some point

I like Charlie, Ewen and Claudio in LWR, I am looking forward to watching LWD over the next couple of weeks. Peoples attitudes to the pair of them piss me off. So fucking what if they have support vehicles, you think you can do better then go and do better.

Otherwise your whiming is just jealous bitching because they got to do something you didn't. Raise some money and ride across India on a Bullet or join Nick Sanders round the world group just stop poisening yourself and eveyone else.

As for hardcore, well my money would be on the little Japanese guy I came across on an international forum who has been touring on an early eighties Goldwing, including places there are no roads...

If you were to recplicate this journey what bike would you use?

I would personally do it no a Honda CG for a frew reasons.

Parts are very very very easy to get.

Bullet proof bike.

120 or so miles to a small tank - so cost wise not to bad.

Cheapish.

I finally got round to finishing the Race to Dakar book and DVD, for people who say Charley is a nancy woofter actor then have a read/watch of it.

For a long read on the web, try this..... I think a lot of the pictures got lost in a server crash, but it's a good read.

You would clearly love to fellate the pair of them, so your attitude is equally suspect. As it happens, me and my gixer managed quite a few thousand miles around Europe in 2006, all solo, all without a support crew. Nothing like Ted's acheivements, but a good fun little adventure all the same - me, my bike and wherever the road took me.

So, you're getting all hissy over comments about something you've never read and have no idea about? Rolling Eyes

I've done my fair share of travel, and been to some fairly interesting places - how about 6 months solo in South Korea furthering my understanding of their martial arts, history and culture - will that do you? Strangely, i managed that without a bodyguard/security advisor, just like lots of people head off to far-flung places with a few quid in their pockets and little else. So, 'jealous of their achievements'? Nope, because really, they didn't actually achieve much - were we watching the same show?

Personally, i'd rather hear the sort of stories the likes of Ted Simon and our very old (i mean very own) 1930Ariel (and others) have to tell - because they are real stories from real people.

Now, here's a picture of Ewen busy butchering the role of Obi-Wan - perhaps you might like to crack one off over it?

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/c5/Obiwan1.jpg/200px-Obiwan1.jpg
Och, masta, what are we gunna dee noo? Rolling Eyes
