I think I have isolated a problem on the NTV , it has eaten yet ANOTHER reg/rec , its the 2nd one in as many years. (but OTOH it won't actually even start so I can't stick a multimeter on it this is my best guess)

Do you have any links on how to attach a bomb proof superdream reg rec to my NTV?

the NTV one looks like this

https://shop.wemoto.com/pictures/hl/aec17.jpg

One of the connectors is 3 pins the other is 4 pins.

it is completely inaccessible though so I'm just going to leave the old one in and put it where my tools should go and carry me tools in the rear tray.

Another final thought is that if the battery doesn't need charging a reg / rec discharges excess erm energy via its fins in the form of heat right?.

Ta muchly.

Think it would just dump it to earth.

They do need to disapate heat. Hence putting it somewhere without much airflow might well fry it more quickly.

All the best

Aye, dumps it to earth through a zennor diode which generates heat.

Good thing about Honda, they tend to use the same colour wire to do the same thing on all their bikes.

On a superdream one: Yellows = alternator output. Red = DC output, green = earth, white on black = voltage sense

Found a wiring diagram for an NTV. On the assumption yours is the same you appear to have three yellows, two greens and two red on white.

No votage sense wire for the reg/rec, how odd.

If you can find a superdream reg/rec it should wire up to your bike as follows:
Yellows > yellows (any order, doesn't matter)
Green on superdream one > Either or both greens on NTV (they are joined after the connector anyway, I don't know why they have two, one would have done the same job).
Red on superdream one > Either or both red and whites on NTV (same story as the greens).

Now, white on black on superdream one. This should connect to any wire in the loom which has normal battery voltage in it when the ignition is on. I usually suggest connecting it to the power feed to the rear brake switch which should be black and brown. Any black and brown wire would do though. If you can't be bothered, connect the sense wire to the same wire as the red one but this compromises the functionality a bit.

Bolt it to something metal to allow for good heatsinking.

Ta muchly . Thumbs Up Mr. Green Thumbs Up

To dissipate heat I'm going to cut a vent into the side panel of the NTV and use a piece of plastic to make an air scoop so it should be directly air cooled which should keep it nice and frosty.

The OEM NTV one is in a strange place, behind the battery box + tool box and between the rear mud flap which protects the shock, which means that there isn't any direct air flow over it, bah Hondas , I might go for a kwak next time.

Dont think our VFR ones will either, I think they only added the V sensor to the VTEC ones.

I know a guy who had 2 VFR ones fail. He fitted a PC fan on top of the third and it was fine.

It was the constant failure of Suzuki generator and regulators on the GS 550/750/1000 et al in the 80's that lead to the discovery that the Honda super dream reg/rec was a bomb proof alternate part. They stopped frying generators when you'd done this mod too!

Yes I fitted a sperdream reg/rec to my GS550. Worked a charm.

Aye tis a common mod, that's why I bought the FiY model with the fixed Reg/Rec already Very Happy

Just done the one on my ntv.
Rear wheel off, tank off, side panels off and then rear mono shock off.
Honda have put it in such a crap place, mine had a crack right across the middle, looks like it had been like it for a while.
have moved mine to out side where the tool tray is, much easier to change.

only if you have a permanent magnet alternator setup. If you have a field excited alternator and fit a load dumping reg rec you stand an excellent chance of frying the alternator coils and the loom up to the reg/rec.

Stinkwheel, the superdream regulator IIRC uses a thyristor as a voltage controller hence the external voltage sensor (which can also pick up transient system voltage drops easier). Load dumpers that don't have an external pickup use either an internally wired thyristor or a zener.

I have a Yamaha R1 Reg/Rec on my CB-1. It required very little in the way of modification. The Yamaha Reg/Rec I am using has the same amount of wires, its merely a case of flipping them.

Before this I went through 2 Honda Reg/Recs on the CB-1. One non-heatsink and the updated model. Not had any problems since.

Oh and Toby, IIRC there is a mod described on the Bikers Oracle website for a voltage monitor hack for the pre-VTECs.

Well I fitted a CBR600RR Reg rec , off a completely totalled 06 bike, I walked in as he was ripping it apart and it works!. I did find a super dream 250 rec but he was hoarding all his used ones and was only willing to let go of new ones for £80, while the CBR600 one cost me £20.

I just connected green to red accidentally and wondered why it was frying so many fuses.

It seems Honda have gone back to the finned version rather than the flat square ones of my CBR, and bodged it on , it works too to boot.

Now according to this

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=396063

I'm going to clean the wires up a bit then solder and heat shrink them together since I have used gaffa tape and twisting of wires to test to see if it works, and I shall add a PC fan to the fins and also another PC fan onto the heat sink it'll sit on.

All I need to do to fix the NTV fully is to fix the front brake.... and rewire a few things.

Its a strange thought in that the NTV is no longer the bike I originally bought since virtually EVERY item on the bike other than the frame , mud guard , engine , and numberplate are replacements.
