In an effort to decided where to go here a poll Smile

We'll be going to Pavlovs first which is nice cheaper drinks an alright place Smile

Then either moving onto The Purple Turtle, or The Walkabout. Purple Turtle is general pub type place, it'll be a couple of quid donation to get in, has bars, music (had drum and bass downstairs as well last year), and outside covered bit with patio heater things. Walkabout is an Austrilian themed place more kinda clubby etc, normal pub/ club type thing with music to dance to when pissed Rolling Eyes and bit more expensive at the bar. Its £10 in advance for entry or if we get there before 9pm (which won't happen), or £15 otherwise.

So vote for which one you want to go to in preference Very Happy (please reply as well saying what you voted for cos there will always be people voting who actually have no intention of coming and are just being arseholes)

And who is coming?

I voted walkabout because it's pretty good up here so it must be ok down there, not that I'm coming because a) it's too far and b) you don't want me there Razz

The turtle's not got many old geezers, no more than the walkabout at any rate. Personally I'd prefer to do the turtle as I will be able to drink more on my limited funds if I don't have to pay entry at the walkabout.

But the turtle isn't everyones cup of tea, it is very much a pub rather than a club. But it is fairly big and drinks don't cost too much. The dance floor is a bit laughable really, it's about 3 meters by 3 meters, we kind of took the whole thing over last year.

I'm voting turtle, cause I always seem to end up either dancing stupidly or getting chucked out from the walkabout, or both. Rolling Eyes

Rolling Eyes

The Turtle is just full of long haired grungy people that wear a lot of black, and like heavy heavy music. ...Not that i am one to descriminate of course. Its just kinda depressing for a new year.

My vote has to go to the Walkabout, i might be cheesy, but hey! Thats what makes new years rememberable! Smile

If the Turtle is chosen, i may not go. Sorry.

I just added an "I don't mind" option, cos I don't mind, but prefer the turtle. Where ever we go, I'll end up really drunk and spending too much money so it doesn't make that much difference Laughing

Right...
The turtle is an 'alternative' pub. The upstairs section will have heavy/alternative music playing, generally pretty packed. Although it's not as bad as people make out, do expect lots of 'alternative' types there. So plenty of mohawks, leather etc, etc. Except it to be pretty packed on New Years Eve.
The downstairs tends to have more dance related music, i.e. Drum 'n Bass, Trance and sometimes (underground, not pop) Hip Hop. The only dance floor is in this section (it was the Dance floor at Pavlov's we nicked last year.)
It's got quite a 'dark' atmosphere (partly 'cos they don't have their lights turned up Smile ), there's also an outside covered section that will probably be pretty cold.
Drinks are only slightly less than at the Walkabout, but not by much at all. At either place you're not going to get much change from a fiver for a double vodka and coke.

The walkabout is a semi-clubby place. However there does tend to be a fairly mixed crowd of people there, it's definitely not as 'trendy' as Yates etc, nor is it quite a proper club, but it's still more than a normal pub.
The music they play tend to be fairly varied popular music; i.e. general cheesy stuff, but also occasionally a bit of Nirvana and other more recent popular metal.
Drinks are about typical prices for a town centre pub, maybe very slightly higher, but not that much.
You can buy tickets in advance, which are £10 and allow you to queue jump, which is nice. I’m going to be sending a pm around with general stuff, and to check who wants me to get them tickets.

If anyone else has any better idea for places to go to that don't charge /ridiculous/ amounts but still stay open late, feel free to tell me about them Rolling Eyes.

My intention was to do the Walkabout because it seems to be a good mix for everyone. If some people wanted to go to RG1, the local cheap (in terms of cliental) and cheesy cattle market, then I wouldn't really want to go, so in the same way I don't expect people that aren’t into that scene to want to come to an alternative pub, especially, as V pointed out, for New Years Eve.

In the end we’re not going to please everyone, I accept.

The general consensus for the start at least is Pavlov’s dog… Was an alternativy style pub, now remodelled in a more ‘trendy’ fashion, so got a range of cliental. The important thing is it’s cheap when you’ve got a ‘Yellow Card’, of which we have two (available for £1 if you have student ID). The idea would be to get the cheap drinks in here, then go on to the Walkabout, which opens later and has more of an ‘atmosphere’.

I think if I'm coming and my sister is coming then it will have to be Walkabout - I could sense trouble if we went to the Purple Turtle.......

I'll ask Sus... she'll probably completely embarass herself either way.. Rolling Eyes

I would guess that some people who aren't coming have been voting for the turtle. Rolling Eyes

When I looked a couple of hours ago there were four votes for the turtle, since then only Anna has replied saying she'd prefer the walkabout, but there's now six votes for the turtle, so something dodgy's going on. Confused

Also, I need a dance floor for New Years Eve!!! Razz

I think that night seemed good because we were very very drunk.
Do you need reminding?

Hmm...Confused good point danny... that reminds me... my 'frog episode' was all due to heavy night in the walkabout! Sick

Hmmm....maybe i should go to the turtle. The morbid aspect of it normally has a sobering effect.

I'll be there...

I personally prefer a more "pubby" than "clubby" place, but don't mind following the crowd...

I prefer pubs to clubs, I don't like walkabout because of the cost of drinks, it's absurd. You need a Lloyd's, better and about 1/4 of the price.

Unfortunately the Turtle is pretty expensive as well.

At both you're looking at about £3 or a tad over for an alchopop, and a tad under £5 for a double spirit with mixer.
Not sure how much beer costs at either.

That's why we go to Pavlov's first Smile.

As mentioned above, I suggested The Walkabout because I think it's a kind of mid-way between a pub and a club.
It's not somewhere I'd generally choose to go for an average night out, however it does offer a good mix of pubbyness and clubyness.
Ie it's not nearly as bad for the non-clubbers as any of the 'proper' clubs out there.

Personally I don't really care where we go, providing we can get something sorted out and not have /too/ many people getting annoyed at where ever we end up.

Well, as you say...
The 'Turtle objections' seem to be outweighing the 'Walkabout objections'.
So looks like the walkabout might keep the peace a bit more Confused Not that i'm biased or anything.

So if we do decide the Walkabout then...

Lets just face it. We wont sort out tickets in time for the Walkabout, so we'll probably just end up going to the Turtle anyway. Then everyone will feel 'temporarily' happy 'at some point'.

Or...lets make the Walkabout seem more desirable.... threaten people with Brannigans Very Happy
