Just bought my rs125, this is my first bike, bike only cost £1100, should i get third party dre and theft or fully comp?

I can get fully comp for £204.00 but with £500 excess
or TPFT for £146.00 with £500 excess

or next quotes

Fully comp £339.00 with £150 excess
TPFT £204.00 with £150.00 excess.

as the bike is only worth £1100, is it worth getting fully comp?

Thanks

Danny

Do you trust yourself not to bugger up?

Fully comp only applies for when you make mistakes. If you don't think you will, and are happy fixing stuff if you make a mistake then TPFT it is.

OK Thanks,

Do you think £500 excess is a bit steep?

Cheers

Are you 17?

It does sound steep, but that's just the price of these things. You can always go for a more expensive quote with less excess. Once again it just comes down to how much you ride the thing, and therefore how likely you are to ride into the back of an expensive car.

Hi

Not sure on your age, but those quotes would be VERY low for a typical learner.

Generally for a learner fully comp would not be worthwhile as the extra cost is extreme. However for only an extra £50 it is probably worth it just for being able to deal with any claim with less hassle.

Fully comp on bikes rarely covers injuries to yourself (unlike most car fully comp policies), and the reality is that if you claim then it is unlikely to be financially worthwhile. For example your £1100 RS if you crashed and claimed would maybe be bargained down £1000, knock off the £500 excess and you would get £500. You would get a loading for the next few years and loose any no claims / starter bonus which would rapidly wipe the £500 out.

All the best

Keith

I'm in the same situation and have just insured with H&R for £148 - TPFT. It has a compulsory 500 excess though so I think you got a really good deal.

For the extra £50, I'd have gone fully comp. I've had fully comp since day 1, and have claimed for e.g., vandalism, without it affecting my premium.

I've had a no-fault accident, and being fully comp, the insurance company delivered a hire bike the next day and made periodic payments for lost earnings, later to be recovered from the third party. With TPFT, you won't get this, nor will you possibly have legal cover either; my legal bills were covered to something silly.

fully comp is the way to go, i had an accident on my bike which was debatable on blame, owing to the fact it was in a car park, the fact he cut a corner and was on my side of the road was irrelevant, when i spoke to the insurance company they said they would have fought it if i had been fully comp but as i was TPFT i just had to live with the loss. Plus bike hire would have been seriously handy and would have saved me battering the credit card for a new bike in the short term. But you have made your call and i dont blame you, just try for fully comp next year !!! if you can lol

for anything under a couple of grand, fully comp isn't really worth it due to policy loading. Just stick with what you got.

You should have got someone legal on the case. The same laws which make it illegal to stunt on land which the public have access to should be covering this accident.

You got shafted by listening to your insurance on this one. Your legal cover on the policy should have made it possible for you to get someone like Bikers defence on the case and before you ask I had legal cover on my TPO insurance, its the one upgrade I always buy.

Generally speaking for Bikes under £500 there is no point to TF&T because the premium and excess is more than the bike is worth.

Same when you are talking Bikes under £1.5K and Fully Comprehensive. The cost of the premium, the excess and the amount your premium will be bumped by is more than the Bikes value.

I'll probably go with Fully Comprehensive once I get my 5th year NCB.
