Was out last night, at a party and stayed over..
Got home tonight about 9 to find I'd left my door unlocked.
My macbook isn't on my coffee table like it normally is, and I've hunted high and low for it,l nor can I remember moving it.
NOTHING else is moved nor missing tho, which is most bizarre.
I can only assume someone's tried the door or something, and thought I was either around nearby, or was disturbed so just grabbed what was most obvious and legged it.
tw@!
I've changed the locks JUST in case, but my god I'm pissed off now!

OK, I don't know what A MacBook is, and can't be fussed checking but is it behind the sofa, on the mantel piece or in the kitchen/bedroom? ____________________ Roger wrote: Women don't get damp for clingy puppies. Reported it to the police at 9:30 last night, and they were round by 11, after the local nick phoned to make sure I was still okay for a visit at that time of night.
Realised just after they'd left that a case of wine was missing too. (6 bottle cardboard box)
JUst the sort of 'haul' that a single person could carry I'd expect.
ah well.. chalk this one up to experience, and be more careful next time.

You're not the only person to do stupid things like that - you were just remarkably unlucky. Hopefully your insurance will cover the MacBook, fingers crossed you haven't lost too much personal information (and there are no bank account details etc saved on there...)
I was late for work on Friday morning because I couldn't find my house keys anywhere. I hunted high and low for the things. Twenty to thirty minutes were spent checking every pocket, bag and work-surface area, even down the back of the sofa.
Thought "stuff it, I'll get my spare set off my parents at some point today" and left for work. It was only when I closed the door I realised I had left the bloody things in the lock outside ALL night! I was very lucky! ____________________ Avast! Pirates ahoy!

All the 'personal' info that was on there was my contacts list, some photos (most of which are on my online gallery or in the mediacenter too). No great loss there, as the contacts are all in my phone, which I've just synched with my work laptop, so I have a 'backup' just in case the phone dies.
As for bamk details and the like, there were various saved passwords and stuff in Firefox, as well as my Email applications obviously, but my login is password protected, and my user partition is encrypted (one of the nice features of Mac OSX is the Filevault, which means only I can see what I have saved)
There IS a 'guest' account on there that can be used without a password, but without my password or the root login, it can't be configured to work anywhere else but my home. They may be able to browse the web on a wired network, but that's about it.
Unless they have a OSX CD that is, and do a complete reinstall of the OS.
I'm confident my data is secure.

Excellent news.
Request I should probably stick in the geek zone but - could you forward me instructions for setting up a similar arrangement on my MacBook please? At the moment it's a free for all and if I continue to do clever things like leave my keys in the door outside all night I'm asking for trouble ____________________ Avast! Pirates ahoy!

feef sorry to hear about the break in, same thing happened to me in 2005. They broke in and only took my laptop and a few DVDs and that was it. They left my pc, several TFT screens, ps2, and other valuable items in the house.
I would agree to it being one person and if there is no sign up break in, it could be due to them having your keys, perhaps someone who knows how to pick a lock.
I would recommend you double check all the point of entries in your house for any clues, i.e. windows for any signs of 'Force'. Very good move about having the locks changed, but for prevention purposes maybe look into purchasing an alarm, motion sensor lights for the outside, better locks.
Hope you had house and contents insurance, ____________________ Bike Level: Amateur | CBT Passed
