Can you take a pillion on a CBR 400?

been looking at some photos and there seems to be a pillion seat but no grab handels or more importantly foot pegs.
Would hate to have to have to explain to her parents how i managed to smash their daughter's legs up!

So are there some and im just being blind or do they not have them?

Handles don't really matter (although are helpful) as you can get the pillion to just hold on to you (not too bad if it's your missus) but footpegs....that's a different matter.

Yep it handles pretty well with a pillion on.
The footpegs fold down from behind the fairing when your using them Thumbs Up So that your not kicking around looking like a tit with pillion footpegs all the time. Good for wheelies though Mr. Green

The footpegs fold up and hide away under the pillion seat. Had a mate on the back of mine for about 500 miles over 2 days when we went to see mates and do a rally. He was fine. It was easy.

umm not 100% sure but a mate had a cbr250 over here in Aus and the pegs used to fold up under the seat more or less above the rear wheel.
Don't know about your but it might be worth a look.
I never knew they had them until he said neither did he until someone showed him and then pulled them down and out.

They were only small but they were there

I've been pillion on a CBR400 quite a few times and didn't have a big problem despite not being the smallest of people. It's far from the most comfortable pillion bike, but I made do.

I would put my right hand (or both) on the tank to brace myself. You're much more in line with the acceleration that way, if need be you can naturally grab the riders waist if you find yourself being thrown back. You're also braced against the tank under braking.

Thanks so much for this thread! I actually had no idea I had pillion pegs until I took a look under my pillion seat and saw them! Embarassed It's a great design as well if I may say so, much better than the Aprilia ones that are always sticking out in plain sight... Very Happy

I took my 13 stone university boyfriend as pillion on my old CBR400 all the way to from Cardiff to Reading where I ditched him onto G's bike because he was fidgeting too much (scratching your bollocks/rearranging yourself in the outside lane of the M4 is not wise).

Likewise, we went to Silverstone from Cardiff for the weekend with luggage too.

I HIGHLY recommend putting some sort of webbing on the rear plastics. The footpegs are so high that any buckles/fastenings on boots scratch the plastic pretty badly. I had some terrible marks from the vecro on the insides of his Sidi boots. Thumbs Up

Excellent Very Happy Cheers for that Thumbs Up

Thought it would be a bit silly to have a pillion seat but no pegs!

Ya they have really cool fold away pegs! You could probably get a luggage rack to double up as a rail, but all the pillions i've had hold onto my waist.

The pillion arrangement on a CBR400 is just a Japanese joke, based upon an ancient proverb about Choi Lung Fat, a 12th Century Warrior, who, after winning many many battles and gaining barbaric strength over time, grew up to be the same size and weight as an average Westerner. Hence, how he could no longer ride his horse.

This is also why the Gullarm is barely big enough for a 12 year old child, more or less a single fully grown human being. The fold away pillion pegs only act to increase aerodynamics for the rider, the pillion seat, is in fact just a support for your arse in the full racing crouch.

Took my first pillion on my gullarm yesterday, they found 'hands on the tank' to be the best method.

No grab rail - I think the pillion is supposed to use the grab strap that goes across the pillion seat? Wouldn't fancy clinging onto that myself... Shocked

Be alright to pillion someone who has nothing to compare it to, but compared to going on the back of a ZX6 or something its terrifying, feels like you're on the back of a pushbike doing 70mph, plus you're sat way above the rider.

Try perching up on the back of an FZR600, clinging onto the tiniest grab rail in the world, getting 120mph windblast!!! Shocked
