I've gone all through my life and never been in hospital, tomorrow's the first time.

Anyone had their tonsils out?

What can I expect.

I'm mid 30s, so no youngster.

Saying this, one of my best mates Nick is in intensive care at the moment, after becoming ill over Christmas, so I'm more worried for him than me.

well, they dont use anaesthetic because it can affect your gag reflex and make you throw up.

first they inject something to stop you throwing, its done at the back of the mouth where it starts to narrow.

this makes you sting a bit, then they get some long pliars, and tie off the tonsils so they dont bleed down your throat, then they pull them off with the pliars.
they then sear the end to seal it.

you'll find that you cough loads and get a burning sensation, if this is the case. tell the doctor and they will give you a tear duct injection to help you.

its a very very unpleasant experience with lots of pain and suffering that will last a few weeks.

If they pull them too hard it will lift your testicles into your stomach because they are joined by a stringy thing.

I had mine out as a kid (6-7ish), was knocked out. I understand they keep changing their minds over a) whether they should come out or not and b) what food you can have after. I had ice cream, I've heard others had cornflakes.

It's funny though, I don't remember having a sore throat, just that I was told I was going to have my tonsils out. I also don't remember having a sore throat afterwards, either. I'm thinking there was nothing wrong with me and it was then that they implanted the chip...

I had my tonsils and adenoids out as a kid and I don't remember it being too bad, had a very sore throat for a week or so afterwards and I remember spitting out a lot of blood when I woke up. It's done under a general anesthetic, or at least it was back in my day Very Happy

its also not uncommon for patients to wake up mid-surgery

What the fuck are you basing this experience on then?

You firstly give quite frankly bad advice or opinions that are neither funny or appropriate and then you spout pure shite about anaesthesia?

You'll be given a general anaesthetic and will be induced in the lay up room and after the surgery when the surgeons are finished the anaesthetic will be titrated down and you'll start to 'wake up'. This is more of the sense that you can hear people talking around you and the fact that you will still be in the OR or recovery people often believe that they are awake when they are having the op. You are not given a muscle paralysing agent so if you did start to wake up then you'd be able to move and let them know!
You'll be intubated with an ET via the nose (more likely)
The tonsils will be cautarised and not cut (see after pics)
It is worse for you to have them done as an adult than as a child.

Does it really hurt that much as an adult? Wikipedia:

Quote:
Tonsillectomy in adults is more painful than in children, although each patient will have a different experience. In adults it can be extremely painful often referred to as more painful than child birth

im basing on tonsils being very minor surgery, ie: nothing to worry about, with 0 risk factor.
why not have a bit of fun with it?
sorry SIR, ill run everything i say past you next time so you approve.
humble apologies,
mr. idontgiveafuck

I had my tonsils out just after my 17th birthday, so just over a year ago
I had a quincy on my tonsils a couple of times it was extremely painful and ended up with septicmia (sp?) and got admitted to hospital, this is why i had to have my tonsils out

In my opinion having my tonsils out was nothing compared to the pain i had already experienced, was just like a sore throat to me, i was still chatting away eating etc as normal

However the girl in the next bed to me seemed to be in a lot of pain and kept on whinging, she did my head in and didn't know why she was whinging so much, as i had the same surgery and wasnt in all that much pain.

You get given good pain killers, i got given co- codamol and volteren, i had to have two co-codamol and a volteren at once when i had a quincy, but after having my tonsils out i just had co-codamol, worked wonders though! Was constantly loopy, be careful you dont get addicted... i did

Everyones different you will just have to see how it goes Thumbs Up

having it done in your 30s huh?

well from my own personal 30s experience it was ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow some more ow and awful Shocked.

Took ages to recover, the pain was dreadful and although I suffered big time, I am grateful I don't get chronic tonsilitis any more. The surgeon however, damaged my eustation tube on the left side which has left me with tinitus and occasional ear problems. I was told at the time, the only operation more painful was the one where they get rid of piles, I hope I never get piles Shocked

erm i guess I'm not being very positive here am i? sorry but it isnt pleasant but good luck anyways you may be totally different Confused

I had the op done in Saudi Arabia, the pain in my ear which i expereinced at the time was put down to the healing process as my tonsils were huge and very badly damaged by the years of tonsilitis id suffered.

The tinitus delveloped over a period of months after Id got back to the UK several months later, prior to that i had what i can only explain as the feeling of my ear being full of water all the time, this turned out to be true as the scar tissue was blocking off my eustation tube and the constant blockage brought on the tinnitus. This has now been diagnosed as mennieres. Luckily i only get bad attacks infrequently and with warning so I have been able to keep my driving licence. I doubt I would have sued even if the op had been done here, Ive got used to the noise in my ear and reduced hearing now even if it gets a little frustrating at times

The mennieres when it hits is pretty rotten though and an attack can last for hours which leaves me exhausted for a day or so, imagine the drunk stage where you cling to the floor scared to move cos youll spew well thats how i feel when im having an attack Sad last one was 2 years ago though so i can deal with that and i have medication to keep it at bay.

Hi all,

I'm back home now,the operation went okay. I'm a bit out of it, spent most of yesterday asleep.

The surgeon and the anethatist told me that it took over 1 hour to get them out, as they were very big and my throat and mouth was large added to that i'm a big lad.

Also, when he cut in to them they were infected on the inside (not the outside), so i'd be having tonsilitus again shortly. So not only am I on pain killers, I am also on some really severe looking anti biotics (they are red!!).

I managed to sleep 8 hours and was discharged after eating breakfast this morning, and I have managed to eat Pizza & Chips for tea today.

Ohh during the op, they have managed to chip my front tooth, so I need to see a dentist to get that fixed.

My wife had a word with the hospital (I was too shy) and they will pay for the filling.

I'm still a little tired, but I have a 2 week sick note to get better on.

Ohh the surgeon said I can drink alcohol after 48 hours, so its not all bad.
