Whilst travelling up the M5 last Saturday in the car every now and then I'd get absolutely blinded not only through my rear view mirror, but both my side mirrors as well.

At first just thought it was poorly adjusted headlights. Then I started looking at the makes of the cars and every car that blinded me was a bloody Audi.

Any particular reason why? Also note that I was also blinded by one Volkswagen, so could be a German phenomenon.

It's the new bulbs they use, it's becoming an ever-more common problem. I frequently flash them, only to get flashed back. Fvck 'em. Laughing

HID Headlights!

They're not maladjusted they're a hell of alot brighter than standard Halogens.

I find its annoying also when you go over bridges and speed humps cos you get blinded by them too.

4x4's with HIDs piss me off too!

I think the car your driving and its seating position play an important role when it comes to regular cars lights being dazzling, more so than the make of the lights in the oncoming vehicle, but that's only an observation from driving a good few cars.

Hi

I had a little Porsche behind me on the M40 over Christmas (Boxster). If you were directly in front it was OK, but if they were in the lane to the right of you then you got dazzled. Almost as though the dip didn't so much as dip down but instead to the side.

All the best

Keith

The ones fitted to German cars can be a little annoying as they go over bumps, but nowhere near as bad as the cheap aftermarket ones. Most have no self-levelling device (that's legally required), the ones with bad aim are blinding.

HID lights really pissed me off a couple of years ago, when I had a smart roadster and my arse was about 3 inches from the floor.

However in the MR2, with my arse a lofty 5 inches from the floor, its not such a problem.

That, or the technology has improved.

Fair enough it is safer for the Audi drivers cause they can see more.

Surely makes it more unsafe for the blinded drivers.

Sure puts Audi further up the Top Gear generated "Cock-o-meter" if you ask me.

As dipped headlights in the UK are aligned to point to the left, if you are in a lane to the left in front of another vehicle you will at some point be directly in the range of the beam. I find angling my mirrors slightly off where I would really like them helps a bit, and also makes me look that little bit thoroughly when I do need to check them.

The amount of times i've had to stop dead just to see in front of me because some Merc/Audi/BMW driver coming towards me has these stupid lights. Thumbs Down

Also hate the way they change colour so it seems as tho you're being flashed.

Unfortunatly there seemed to be no dip at all, so if you were in front and to the left you were getting blinded.

If they take it to the continent and don't fit something to deflect the headlights they will be lethal.

All the best

I didn't know there was a Audi Cock-o-meter. Blinding. 'Coz I was thinking about making a post about Audi drivers, seems all the BMW drivers have migrated.

I dont have a problem with any Audi drivers, the ones ive encountered today have all been courteous, on the ball and driving well. Which is more than can be said for BMW driving small cocks and flat dicks.

Doesn't make it OK though. How would you feel if your dazzling lights caused me to swerve in your direction?

Well done.

Just because some car manufacturers have obviously not put enough research into their new optional extras, doesn't mean I shouldn't drive on the road at night. Rolling Eyes

Have you ever used them.

The difference they make is amazing.

And seriously if they bother you that much don't drive at night, other than that not much more you can do.

Unless you pull them over and give them a stern talking to over their choice of bulbs.

You complain about being dazzled? just close your eyes Laughing
Seriously though just plan ahead, then if you do crash sue the manufacture of the car that blinded you.

But you live in the states which has rather more restrictive laws on headlights which will prevent them dazzling as much

McGee wrote:

Wait for the law to catch up with technology. The law is half arsed defining headlight in terms of power consumption. A small sun in each headlight would comply with the law as long as they only consumed 60W, even if they incinerated everything within a mile of the front of the car.

All the best
