Would you buy a nice bike? a tidy car? A holiday, laptop, clothes etc

or the old...

'put your money in bricks and mortar'

I'm 19 and obviously kind of young and not at all in the right job to be paying off a mortgage but a part of me is saying this is the only chance I'll ever get to have a house.

But then again, I soooo want an Integra Type R and an 06 GSXR600 Laughing

So what would you guys do?

a few treats maybe like cars motorbikes etc, but with that amount i wdnt blow more than £5k

a big chunk as a deposit for a house might be good, but it might also be good to think wider, and could that money be used to set your life on a new direction.

thats obviously a much more tricky decision

a holiday would be good too

Buy a house? , in a falling market have none of you people heard of negative equity? OK people are willing to have negative equity on cars bikes etc but 10K is small change compared to property.

I've noticed on most of the property accounts I've done most people are actually losing money and I've actually had to do lots of capital gains tax comps for people divesting their property.

It cascades in that people divest = more supply , since people see prices fall they wait till they bottom out THEN buy, creating an excess supply problem.

Yes ok in the super long term ie 10-15 years there may yet be another bubble but in the short term its going down. Unless you read the daily express which over the past 25 days has predicted rises falls rises then falls and yesterday a huge rise.

As said by the OP

"its the last chance I'll have to own a house"

is a hall mark of a bubble, and as said ALL bubbles burst, as with empires they all fall and crumble.

I would be tempted to get a new bike (second hand) and go traveling for a while...maybe even until all the money runs out. Laughing Other than that I don't really know.

House.

Rather than chucking cash in rent, might as well throw it on a mortgage.

Maybe I could spare a bit, add it to my CBR as a trade in, and start drooling at the prospect of a 1098.....

Drooling

Stick it in a high interest account for a retirement fund.

Not sure about the rest of the country but property sales have ceased here in North Wales and slowed down considerably in and around Chester. No first time buyers means prices are coming down. Economists and analysts are warning us about economic downturn. Interest rate cuts are not being passed on to the customers as banks are holding onto every penny they have. The country is losing faith in the government. As Blair left office last year he warned of a troubled 2008. So it all looks pretty gloomy at present.

JonB has the right idea, get some independent advice though.

Cancel my student loans, stick it in a high interest account and only remove money as I need it to live. Anything else at the end of uni, I'd save.

Though I'd probably take a few hundred quid out to sort out my bike first.

depends where those debts are , the SLC takes a small amount of money I borrowed once about 3.2% might have increased to 4% , I move it around general highish yield accounts ie the 6.25% - 5.5% ones on the market,

Bah if only A&L would give us the 12% on lump sums ,

the problem with that is you don't get tax relief or more accurate deferred tax relief on your contribs , it also isn't tax free,

Thus you lose the tax relief & you get taxed on the gain of interest and or accumilation,

But Cestrian is right go get some advice, since the calculations are pretty horrendous.

I would buy a car and bike.

Or pick a mate who deserved it and go traveling around the world with him, until its all gone, should last a few good months.

How did you get the money anyway?

At 19?

Personally I would only go for a decent bike and a non sporty car, otherwise you will be getting raped by two insurance companies.

I would then spend a few grand this summer touring europe and having a good time. With at least a week at the Nurburgring.

With what's left, which should be £12k, I'd have that sitting in savings, at the highest rates possible, and leave it for a deposit on a house for a couple of years down the track when you can afford the repayments.

£12k should be more than enough for a good deposit on your first place.

Wouldn't go spending it on a house. Like Itchy says (and he should know) we are in a bubble right now. I would buy a new bike and all that, then put it into a saving account or something guaranteed to return money.

What happens if you get a massive mortgage in 2 months using your £25k deposit, then suddenly house prices start to drop. Its already levelled out in some places and we are seeing a lot more renting and house sharing where people are forced to lower their requirements so they can actually get a roof over their head.

Massive world tour by bike / train / boat etc would be a MAJOR possibility too Cool
