I'd wanted one since I first saw one smothering a double page spread in Bike
It makes no sense, just pure desire, and part of owning the R6 is to determine whether I can get along with a bike not made by Mr Honda. Apart from the starting niggle with the R6 (and continual testing throughout spring most likely), I can't see any non-logical reason as to not owning one. Even the insurance is affordable. Prices also seem around the same than the R6, if I was to trade it in. I'd still keep the NC as a bike to try and get the best of, the R1 will be for daily use with the occasional weekend jaunt when I want to scare myself silly.
Early days maybe, but one can dream.
A CBR954 is also in the running - another exceptional road bike, but isn't quite as gorgeous.
Why not? |

buy the R1.
Only because I want a 954 and want the choice to be as large as possible... ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F
Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another. |

I love Blades and would probably go for the 954 but only because my mate would never let me live it down if I bought Yamaha. However, I love those silver and black R1s, they are so gorgeous that I would be in the same boat as you.
I think in the end that the practicality of the Blade plus the fact that I know Honda so well would sway me towards the Honda but I would have to test ride both, just in case.
Nice dilemma to have, I wish I could afford either
Cheers

I am 5ft 5 and a half with short legs, and I found it hard to reach the ground on the R1 when I sat on one. I could just about tiptoe with my left leg if I slid off the seat a little. I didn't have that problem on the 929 or the 954.
But I disagree with the comments about Yamaha build quality. Yamaha are the only one of the smaller three jap bike manufacturers to ever approach honda build quality, and IMO in the past few years, it has surpassed them on sportsbikes.
At least Yamaha don't use E-Zee break plastic quick release fasteners... |
A friend of mine has just picked up the warranty relacement items for his 2006 R1 from his local dealer. Cost? £1200+ if he had to buy them himself.
Honda aren't perfect but, speaking as someone who has worked extensively on all Jap manufacturers bikes, recent and older, Honda are still in the lead, followed by Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki are pretty similar.
Don't get me wrong, all four have their strong and weak points, for example, if buying a 954 Blade, factor the cost of a Power Commander and proper set-up into the purchase price. If you're talking pure build quality though, Honda are still out in front.
Cheers

I like the 98 R1, especially if you're stick a steering damper on it and use it mainly as a track tool.
And I like the new style R1s with the underseat exhausts.
But that one in your pic is not to my taste.
So as an all-round superbike, for that kind of money, the 954 is unbeatable. ____________________ Kawasaki ER6n -> Honda CBR600RR -> Honda VTR 1000 -> Moto Guzzi Norge 1200
