I have had a bit of toothache for four months ( pressure of work and the dentist being buisy caused the delay) but went to get it filled today.
At an estimate I would say it now hurts five times worse.
Is this normal or should I just demand he pulls the bugger out in the morning?

I had to have a root canal a couple months ago as a filling had fallen out and I'd ignored it for a bit too long. I went into the dentist in terrible, rage inducing, nearly intolerable pain. After the local anesthetic wore off, a very slight bit of pain returned, but that was all. And it was gone by morning. I now have an untouched bottle of 30 Vicodin just sitting around for when I get bored. Now that's a result. Thumbs Up

Hope you get your problem sorted. Toothache pain is the worst.

Sorta the same thing happening here... broke a tooth in April, had it filled/rebuilt, but the pain kept comin' back. I had it filed down a little in November (he'd built it up too much) but still had toothache over Christmas. Turned out filling hadn't taken properly and I had an infection. The pain was the worst I've ever felt, kept me awake for days and felt like someone was drilling up into my cheekbone with a blunt instrument. Was caning all of the painkillers I could get my hands on, but ordinary paracetamol/iboprufen wouldn't touch it. At times it felt like there was nothing else going on in this world other than my toothache Sad

Had to see an out-of-hours dentist on Boxing Day (kerrrchingg!!) and had it xrayed, then got some antibiotics & some Cuprofen some Co-codamol on the go... took enough of these to sedate a small horse just to get a few hours' kip, and it was a booze-free NYE for me too Thumbs Down

Gotta either (a) have root-canal treatment Confused Question Crying or Very sad or (b) have it whipped out ... either way, I've acquired a small quantity of prescription painkillers in case it comes back with a vengeance in the meantime.... PM me... Mr. Green

I have at last discovered why the English like warm beer. We have such lousy teeth it is all we can bear to drink.
I have had a can on the radiator for a quarter of a hour and it is not making me cry when I drink it.

I know how ya feel, i got tooth ache on Monday this week, it's got progressively worse and at the minute I am in a hell of a lot of pain, fuckin hurts like fook! my cheek bone is killin as well for some reason, and to make matters worse ive also got a really bad earache in the right ear (its right side of teeth that hurt)

Lookin in mirror my back lower tooth has a visibly large amount missing, which I think may be the cause of pain, but the pain feels like it's coming more from the upper back tooth, so not sure if I've got 2 problem teeth or one and pain is "spreading" Shocked

All I know is it hurts lots and I can't afford a dentist just yet. Brick Wall what is most annoying is, I used to drink loads of fizzy drinks, but about 2 months ago I gave up all together, since then I've had a couple of cans at most, I have really got no cravings for fizzy drinks anymore and have the self-disicplne not to buy it any more! and now all of a sudden I get tooth problems, 2 months after givin it up! grr

ibruprofen is helpin a bit at the minute, just wondering... its gone from painful to very painful in a week, wonder what it'll be like next week Laughing it's very distracting as well, nearly went up a grass verge in the van earlier Laughing

I had a cracked tooth, abcess and a bone infection in my jaw once, I actually cried

Cloves help a lot though

I also found getting a glass of water, taking a gulp and holding it over the painful tooth helped also.

What a legacy of the Blair years and his Hamstead Socialism. Are there no NHS dentists in your area or a dental teaching hospital? Two fillings on the NHS=£43.

*ahem* ...The trigeminal nerve serves the face and jaws. All the teeth are linked by branches of the same nerve. A pain may be felt in the upper jaw, when the cause is a tooth in the lower jaw. This is called a 'referred pain'. It occurs when decay within a tooth is the source of the pain.

If you know which tooth is causing the bother, you could try some Orajel from ... it's a benzocaine gel which you apply to the tooth itself and it works its way into the cavity and numbs it really well... albeit temporarily. It's about a fiver from Boots. I caned a whole tube of it over Christmas. It numbs everything it touches. I've spilt quite a few drinks down myself whilst using it.

I have made myself an appointment for the dentist on 23 January... at '2:30'... ... ... IIITHANKYOWW! Mr. Green

(No, really...)

time for me to make another dentally-related post (I promise i'll talk about the enfield soon!)! I'm pretty well in to stude-ing Dentistry at the minute, so hopefully I can give some helpful advice...

@ 1930 Ariel - Duckyboos is right on the money there, sounds like you've got an infection in the root of your tooth. Basically at some point the decay in your tooth got into the root system of it and even though your dentist filled it, the infection is probably still there and unfortunately at this stage you can't reverse it. Classically there are 2 options for you, either A) get the root cleaned out of all the bacteria in it - this is what happens in a root filling, or B) whip the tooth out - no tooth, no problem!
What Tony R is saying is right, some people find that cold water soothes the pain, but this isn't the case for everyone.
The best painkiller for dental pain is Ibuprofen - every kind of pain is different, but Ibuprofen works better than even morphine for dental pain. Dose to take is between 600-800mg (quite a high doseage, but fairly safe if you're not taking too much else) However, DON'T TAKE IT IF YOU'VE GOT ASTHMA OR STOMACH PROBLEMS!!!. It causes problems.

This may take the edge off the pain, but ultimately you'll need the tooth sorted. If you don't get something done then the pain may go away in a week or two, but will come back shortly after and this is the abscess stage...nice and pussy!

@ Sparks
- Sounds like you've got the same thing too I'm afraid. Once again, Duckyboos is spot on (you've been doing your homework! Laughing ) with the referred pain stuff - that's probably why you're feeling it from your top teeth and on your face to an extent. Although, I might be wrong and there may actually be a problem with one of your top teeth too. Either way you need to get it sorted out too before it gets any worse

I study and work in a teaching hospital, and although yes it will probably be a student who sees you on the plus side they will be totally shadowed by a much more senior member of staff who can step in at any time, you should just be able to walk in off the street (no need to register) and it's also free!!!

Oh, and on the subject of stopping the sugary drinks, the pain from the tooth is the end result of months of decay being allowed to eat away at it, so don't feel too miffed that as soon as you stopped drinking them you've got pain - it's probably been on-going for a good few months just you've not been aware of it cause there's not been any pain.

and @ Duckyboos - you sure you're not secretly studying to be a dentist?! Laughing

Frig, that's a long post, but hope it's cleared up a few things! If anyone's got any more questions, just ask and i'll do my best to answer them.

Cheers, Stu

(i'll prob be posting some bike related stuff soon cause i'm currently just getting together enough cash for some goodies for the Enfield)

Been there and I tell you I would have rather have given birth as it would have been over quicker than the tooth ache I screamed with for days. No pain killer would work. That was two years ago and was told it was sensitive teeth, cold and hot hurt ffs breathing even hurt. I started using that colgate sensitive has potassium citrate in it apparently calms the nerves, No bother! about 6 months of using and my teeth stopped hurting didnt cure immediate probkem but was happening a lot.

If i do get a sort sensitive tooth from to much choc, ice cream etc i brush them now and it goes away its not even sore when i do get it .Not been near a dentist in over a year and i was a regular there.

In the long run its worth it. Try ibropfan for the pain for now. To avoid getting them ripped out and becoming gummy bear then use that tooth paste, make sure it says pain relief on box as there is more than one type of the colgate one.

Hope it gets better.

As above.

Go back to the dentist and get it sorted. I cannot stress how much you need to do this. I had a filling done and it got infected, cue the most painful and uncomfortable week of my entire life. I was willing to remove the tooth with pliers myself, the dentists said "Oh give it a few days, it'll be fine..." Aye right then, I don't fucking think so! Mad

I OD'd on nurofen, had to get the dentist out late in the evening. As soon as he drilled into the filling the pain went away, it was relief above and beyond anything of a sexual nature; I haven't the words to describe it. I'm looking for a smiley but there just isn't one. Rolling Eyes

This is one area where evolution has failed. Why do teeth have nerves in them, what is the point? They don't need them surely.

Thumbs Up

It's so you don't try and bite into things really hard and then watch your tooth fall out.

I can't think of anything to say to that. Well, I can: but some things don't really need to be said...

Aye, the benzocaine gel worked wonders for me as well. It'd let me get some sleep on the nights where the pain wasn't tolerable. Oddly enough, swishing cold water around was quite the relief as well. I just wish I could afford something other than a temporary filling to go in the massive hole in my tooth. It has to be replaced every six months or so. And I hate/fear/loathe dentists.
